DW CS6 - Currently interacting with a server - ARRG!

Ok - I'm getting very tired of getting the message:

"Dreamweaver is currently interacting with a server..."

I'm using DW CS6 on my local network, with servers on my local network.

Yes, I realize I can uncheck "put file on save" and things like that which will probably get rid of the error - but the fact is, I want to use those options, and this error shouldn't be happening in the first place.

My workaround (which is a pain): After you get this error, DW loses the asterisk by the filename, so it thinks it saved the file - but it didn't - hense the error message. So I simply put my cursor somewhere in an empty space in the file, hit space, then backspace, and then it thinks the file has changed, and will allow me to hit save again -

Sometimes I'll get the error several times in a row. I just keep saving the file until it actually PUTS the file and saves it correctly.

Does anyone have a fix for this, that doesn't involve turning off options I want to use?

Thanks!

It is possibly not a good idea to "put file on save" in any case, because if there is a flukey error in your edit, you then lose the ability to download a copy of the unedited file to do a corrected edit. I never use that "feature" myself, for that very reason.

I think that consciously deciding when to put a file is better than losing the re-edit capability.

I am not sure that there is a "fix" for that function. Your workaround sounds like a great deal more annoying than not using the "feature" in the first place.

    Hi Beth,

Thanks for your opinion on that feature - but again, my post is about the "bug" in the software, not my choice of features I chose to work with.

The error that ocurrs is without question, a bug - in certain instances, I prefer to work with that "feature" turned on - so I'm hoping someone (maybe even Adobe - hey, a guy can hope) will confirm this to be a problem, and even have some kind of solution.

Beth - to address your concern of making a mistake an uploading it - the code I work on is taken offline for downtime maintenance and fully tested before returning to production - so having that feature on in this instance, is a time saver. And when I do turn that feature off, I've made changes and then forgotten to upload them because they weren't automatically "put"...so I use this feature when I need it, and I expect the software to work correctly either way - it's certainly expensive enough to expect that.

Yeah, no worries. I suspect the actual handshakes, etc. that cause the message "Dreamweaver is currently interacting with a server" are pretty much blocking the new uploads.

Better would be a queue set-up, where you could constantly be adding pages to the queue as you work, and not block anything at all...it would work with a buffer, for instance.

Not a suggestion for you, a suggestion for Adobe. I am assured that these messages are periodically monitored.

Another thing you can do proactively is to file a feature request. https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

I agree that this would be a good thing to fix.

    Thanks for your response.

    Beth

I encountered this in CS6 yesterday while working with my Local Testing Server.

The issue was caused by a 0 kb file in my site folder.  I opened the offending file in my plain text editor (NoteTab).  Added some content & Saved it.

    DW problem solved.

    Beth,

I love your queue idea! That would be perfect. What you said about the handshake thing makes sense - - to me, it seems like a connection was left open, as sometimes I might be coding 20 minutes and I go to save, and pow, error. DW wasn't "doing" anything that whole time - so maybe it's leaving a connection open somewhere which causes the error - not sure.

Nancy - yes, I read other places that 0 byte files sometimes did this - but I'm only saving the one file I'm working on, and it's never 0 bytes - but thanks for sharing.

    Thanks!

Just to clarify, any 0 kb file in the site will cause this problem.  Not just the one you're working on.

I too am running into this issue. I'm working on remote servers. I could justify it happening sometimes, but since upgrading from DW 5.5 to 6.0, the occurances have increased a gazillion-fold, and I'm working with the same remote and local servers, etc.

Having to make a "feature" request to address a bug is bogus (until one actually visits the page, and the language says "Feature/Bug Report").

DW does indicate that the file has been saved (by loosing the asterik), but it does not.

    Ugh.

If you go into MANAGE SITES, then go into the site in question....go into SERVERS, then ADVANCED. Check off the box that says "automatically upload files to server on save".

Thank you - I guess that wasn't my problem.  How do I get rid of that little lock next to evey file in my local site?  It asks me every time if I want to make it writable.

Well I'm glad I saw this!  It is happening to me ALL the time in CS4.  I thought upgrading might solve it, but I guess not!
