Here's the scoop:
I'm stymied! HELP. ![]()
It's completely updated. Was before this all started. Here are all the facts as I know them about the crashing. Hope someone can come up with an idea.
1) Sent my CS5 to someone in the IDML because she has CS4. She did the Index for me, and sent back to me. Crashing starts. Index issue??? If so, what??
2) Crashing occurs when I'm trying to make changes in text: when I press delete at the top of the page (to bring back page which pushed over to next page), when I try to delete a section, changing the font of a heading, doing the 4th bullet of four items (first three bullets were fine; fourth one crashes me), doing a full return to add a space (very common reason for crashing), etc.
3) I have been unable to make another CDML–it stops about 45 pages from the end on "Graph 50″. I looked at my errors–found a huge body in inset on the page right about Graph 50 that I didn't need. Got rid of the inset. Could the crashing be from something in Graph 50 alone?
4) Trying to do Split Story crashes Indesign
5) Crash report–does it have something to do with the "library"??? If so, how do I find this?

You have written that when you open the file and when you try do something in it then it crashes.
you should export the file to IDML to remove the minor corruption in it.
also, If you could move the pages or copy and paste the content of the files to a new document and then check.
Manish-Sharma, I am unable to export it to IDML. When I try, it stops on a particular graph which is 43 pages from the end in this long document. I did find that the page past the graph had a lot of inline text. I deleted it all using Story Editor, and it STILL stops at that particular graph. It's all aggravating and I'm stuck.
Also, how will copying and pasting it all to a new document help?? I need to work on it in Indesign. Let me know.
This is a terrible problem, as I was ready to send it to the printers today, and then this crashing happening, and the inability to do the IDML. I do wonder if I could just remove that particular graph?? If so, where would I store it? (My neophyte-ness is showing there).
OK, I got cocktail from here: http://www.techspot.com/downloadget.php?id=3219&file=1&evp=9a984e48a73 1f329854eb2d162eec010 And upon perusing it, it looks like it would just clear caches on my computer! I have to figure out how to use it just for Indesign......
That's where the font caches are. Problems outside ID can cause crashing too.
There's a possibility that moving the pages into a new ID file will work, but I suspect not in this case. My own tendency would be to try to export the text to InDesign Tagged Text (put the cursor in a story without selecting anything and you'll see tagged text as an option in the export dialog. As long as not text is selected, the entire story will export) and palce the resulting file into a new document, but I have a feeling if you can't export to .idml you won't be able to export to tagged text, either.
Can you delete that graph entirely? If so, will it work without it? You may find you need to recreate that.
First of all , the caches which Cocktail will remove is system caches and not specific to InDesign , so just run the tool and remove the caches on your computer and check.
Secondly , Move the pages to the New document.
Create a new document with the same document presets.
Select all the pages in the Pages panel in corrupt document.
Go to Layout >> Pages >>Move Pages
In the Dialog box , select the appopriate settingsfor "Move to : " (it should be the new document)
and then click OK , and check the new document.
Thirdly , to copy and paste the content ,
Create a new document with the same document presets.
Copy the contect from the corrupt file (page by page)
Go to the new document and do EDIT >> "Paste in Place"
Save the new file and check
I'll try your first suggestion with Tagged Text and see what happens. If it fails, I'll consider removing the graph and see what happens.
But can you explain this: everything worked just fine before I sent the gal my file. I created the IDML file for her since I have CS5 and she has CS4. It's only after she added the Index (which I couldn't do myself), and sent it back that this all started happening. Is there something about all this that would help figure out why this is crashing...and why it now stops at this particular graph (it's the last one of 50 graphs) when I try to make an IDML?? And are the two related or not??
An update: I had a hunch all this time, but didn't listen until it was suggested to me to to make a copy of the book in Indesign, and to start removing things. I first removed all the graphs and the pages that contained them. Still couldn't create an IDML; it still stopped at Figure 50 (even though all the graphs and pages that contained them were gone); still couldn't do things without crashing.
It then made sense and I next removed the Index that was just created by someone else. Sudddenly, I could make the IDML, no mention of 50 figures, and no more crashing.
Tell me--are there clues that this was becauase of the Index in the crash details? Or did the Index only reveal problems elsewhere? If it only revealed other issues, does it still make sense to follow the recommendations above?
(See my update above.)
NEW UPDATE: Peter and Manish-Sharma, I've been playing around with things for hours. I first put the Index into Word and then removed the formatting once in Word. I went to a Copy of my book within Indesign, removed the Index, and placed the Word index in I had just made. Indesign STILL crashed if I tried to do a hard return. I was stymied.
BUT, I decided to try all over again to make an IDML file out of the Copy which now had the unformatted Index....and THAT worked unlike all previous failures. And voila, I am able to do a hard return without it crashing...though it gives me that multi-color turning disc. But it goes away and Indesign still sits there. This is a major miracle.
Now I want to see if I can continue to keep it up while doing the needed corrections. Will report back.
Thanks for the Update chocolatechipmeringue, I am glad to know after all this you were able to work out the issue.
It is indeed pretty strange that your collegue worked on the file to make the Index and it resulted in the corruption , now I have few more questions to understand the cause of the issue.
Was your collegue using any third party tool or plugin to create the Index in InDesign?
Or , she created the Index in a different tool all together and then imported it in the InDesign ?
It would be intersting to know how she created the Index after all.
BTW the spinning beach ball that you see may be because of the Pre-flight check , You can turn that off and then check.
Indexing is a pretty complex feature, to be sure. I don't recall if there were indexing bugs in CS4 early releases, but it wouldn't surprise me, and I'm pretty sure there were inthe 7.0.0 release, which is why I wanted to be sure you were up to date. There are also anecdotal reports of problems converting legacy files in CS5 and later.
Since the problem seems to be inthe index story, there are a couple of other things you might want to try, if you have time, that would make it possible to keep the index updated if you edit the file.
The first is to make a copy of the file, remove the index story, and let ID rebuild if for you.
The second is to ask for an exported .idml or, preferably, .inx file from CS4 from your friend. Open that file and save in your updated CS5 and see how that works.
Manish-Sharma, I have no idea what she was using. I do know that when I looked behind it, every single word had a blue icon of some kind. A MESS of blue icons. The really strange thing is that she did the index for TWO books I had translated. It didn't affect one book, but hugely affected this one.
I didn't know that about the spinning beach ball being connected to Pre-flight. Interesting.
I am hugely relieved that I was able to complete the book today and get it sent to Ingram. HUGE relief. Yes, it did crash at the very end of 385 pages, but I got it back up again. lol.
You were wonderful and thank you for helping me.
Yes, the page numbers are still correct. They were just a lot of minor changes throughout that the crashing was preventing me from doing, such as adding another space in front of a few headings, changing the font size in several headings, fixing a footnote here or there, etc. 97% of the book was finished when this crashing happened with the Index.
For future reference, what is your favorite way to do the Index?
I'm not really the one to ask as my workflow generally doesn't involve indexes at all. I'd leave that to the last step, if possible, though, and let the built-in index tools do their job. If you use the built-in tools you have the option of updating after a last miute edit, something you can't do if the index isn't tied to markers in the file.
