It means that you are typing more into the field that it is designed to show. You can get rid of it by not typing so much information into the field.

and the space is too small how do I reduce the font?

You cannot change the font, and even if you could, it's the number of characters that is limited.

Or what do you mean "the space is too small"?

But can you enter all characters for the date, or does it just stop after a number of characters have been entered?

It let's me enter the last number but will place the + sign over it
