Viewing my website on an iPad without internet.

Sep 20, 2012 6:17 AM

Hi

I'm wondering if there is a simple way of making my website viewable on my iPad without being connected to the internet.

What I'm hoping for is a way of creating some kind of 'app' that sits on my iPad and boots up without the need for wifi or 3G.

Preferably not in a browser, so full screen.

Being a graphic designer, it would be helpful when chatting to new clients.

The site design is very conducive to being viewed like this as it is screen proportions and never changes in size.

Obviously, I know that this is possible on my laptop as the files are sat on my hard drive and I can open the whole site through a browser, without being online.

(although I still get a browser window, which I'd rather not have)

Any thoughts, or is this a huge undertaking?

Many thanks.

Dan

I don't know of a simple way of doing it.

To create an app and load it on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, you need an iOS developer's account with Apple. You also need to generate a provisioning certificate using Xcode. I've done it to test PhoneGap apps, and quite frankly it was a real pain.

An alternative would be to use the appcache, which makes a website available offline. See http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/appcache/beginner/.

There is something called SiteSucker in the App store that says you can download entire sites to your phone and browse them off line.

I've never used it but some folks in the Macforums say it works.

Adobe Shadow lets you view your creations on almost any device. Maybe give that a look?

    Offline Pages for iPad - http://itunes.apple.com/in/app/offline-pages-offline-web/id364859644?m t=8

It's a paid app but works like a charm.

Other list of apps that can do this for you here: http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/offline-reader-apps

As a creative, I use Dropbox app for ipad and it works great. Put all design samples in a folder and no internet needed. I think the actual work or design samples is more relevant.

    <DEVIL'S ADVOCATE>

I was wondering since the majority of actual web viewers won't be seeing your client's sites as full screen, why you would want to preview it that way and need to explain why it doesn't have the same appearance "from the meeting" when they view it after it goes live?

I understand browser windows are not exacly worthy of any design awards, but wouldn't you think showing them "the real deal" would be better than previewing it in a way they likely won't or, in some cases, can't see it?

I have been using Kiosk Pro: http://www.kioskproapp.com, http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kiosk-pro-lite/id409906264?mt=8

It allows full screen and also offline browsing, however you will need to pay for that functionality. The free version doesn't have the offline browsing.
