problem scrolling down within an article

Aug 24, 2012 8:50 AM

HI,

I have this wird problem.  I create a pdf folio and when i scroll down within an article gets stuck between pages or appears only part of another page and then returns and dont let me go down.

some considerations:

• only go down at second attempt

• only happens in pages with MSO or scrollable frames

• if i create the same folio in jpg it works fine

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Pedro (Portugal)

Known issue with the new tools and viewer. They’re working on a fix.

In our v23 release. It's, unfortunately, proving to be a very troublesome issue to fix.

Did you create a new version of the viewer via App Builder (formerly known as Vewer Builder)? Or are you still previewing in the v22 version of Adobe Content Viewer?

    Hi Neils:

Do you recomend to use the App Builder instead of the Adobe Content Viewer? And make the app v22?

    I have the same problem

    Thanks in advance

If you have a Professional or Enterprise subscription, you can use the DPS App Builder to create a custom version of the Adobe Content Viewer that works with v23 folios.

    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/digitalpubsuite/using/WS9293e1fb3b977c5c-6 373a356134d312f091-8000.html

If you use that custom Adobe Content Viewer to view a v23 folio, this problem should be resolved. If you don't have a DPS subscription, you'll have to wait until Apple approves the new version of the Adobe Content Viewer in the App Store, most likely in a week or so.

Hi Bob, I think I got a worse case of the same issue:

After several (semi)successfull jerking page turns, Adobe Viewer crashes.

Actually, it crashes anyway, sooner or later, depend (seemingly) on how many pages were turned, how often, how many pages are in article and whether this article has interactive elements.

The iOS logs these crashes as "jettisoned", so it looks like Viewer starts requesting extra memory faster than usual, iOS suspects memory leak and just kills it.

This happens even when there are no other applications running, and iPad has been just power cycled (rebooted). All iPads (1,2 and 3) are affected, OS version is 5.1.1 everywhere, none jailbroken.

What's worse, when Viewer crashes like that, it seems to remember the last viewed problematic page, so after app close and restart, even after iPad power cycle, Viewer crashes on launch and cannot be used anymore.

In this case, crash report lists the reason as "com.adobedigitalContentPreviewTool failed to launch in time", and the only way to get it working again is to completely reinstall the Viewer and re-download the issue.

My team is working on an interactive multimedia encyclopedia project, we use Viewer for pilot and plan to purchase subscription once the preview is approved by customer. But now we got stuck when it's almost done, and I am no longer sure we chose right technology and platform. I just can't understand where we crossed the line, this is especially frustrating.

I got two questions to Adobe support:

    1. Do these free Content Viewer crashes mean that paid customized Viewer will crash too?

    2. Are there any known best practices / workarounds / known limitations (other than 1024x1024 image size) to design multi-page multi-article interactive + PDF publications that would not cause Viewer to crash?

With a custom viewer version v2.3.2.70.60038 it's more or less the same behavior with the PDF format as with v22. It stucks between pages.

    Hi Pedro,

We are investigating to see if we can reproduce this specific case.

    Pedro,

Can you please send me a copy of your InDesign source documents? We couldn't see the article getting stuck between pages, nor could we see the grey screen. You can mail me at neile@adobe.com.

    Thanks,

    Hi Pedro,

I confirmed this is an issue with activated MSOs when scrolling in PDF articles. Unfortunately the fix for that was too risky to get into release 24, and we'll be addressing it in release 25.

This is bad news Neil =S so..

Do we have to rebuild our PDF's base articles in our folios?

I'm not sure what you mean by rebuilding your PDF base articles. The issue only occurs when the MSO is activated.

Sorry, I got my numbers wrong. I meant to say it didn't make 23, and will be addressed in 24. That's not due for a couple of months.

I really should have added one more note that may be useful: this only impacts viewers that have pinch and zoom enabled for PDF articles. To completely remove all of these problems you can build a custom viewer using App Builder that doesn't have pinch and zoom enabled. That will even work in v22 viewers.

Apologies for not mentioning this before. I have no idea why I forgot this part.

It should. The setting is under App Details > Show advanced options. The first item is "Enable PDF zooming".

    Hi Neil,

I don't have pinch and zoom enabled for my viewer app and i'm still encountering the problem. Could you advise further?

    Thanks

May have another work around for this PDF problem. I found that when I imported my pages individually and set them to PNG it stopped them from sticking. This is only useful if you have a few sticky pages and not an entire issues worth.

The problem is specific to PDF articles, so yes, if you switch to PNG the problem won't happen.

Disabling PDF zooming should also remove all the problems, so if you're still seeing it I'd like to know why. Would you mind packaging up just that article's InDesign source files and sending them to me? neile@adobe.com.

It would be cool to be able to disable PDF zooming in Content Viewer, as I come to think of it...

If you are a professional or enterprise customer then you can build your own Adobe Content Viewer using App Builder and disable the PDF zooming feature.

I get that, Neil, I was simply hoping it could be added to the generic Content Viewer...

But on a wish list, this one's far, I would prefer have the sticky pages' bug gone, as the zoom function is sometimes very important to have...
