I have been using DW MX 2004 for several years without incident. today when I went to open it up I got an "access denied" error message. I tried to install the updater and got another message that said that DW MX 2004 was not in the designated folder but when I used "My Computer" the 12MB file was listed as being there. Now when I try to open it again I get no message just a warning tone. Any ideas on how to solve this?
Can you look for an error log and post it here? You can find it within your Application installation folder. 'CrashLogs' or something similar. Sorry, I used to be in MX2004 way back in the days I cant remember where to locate the error logs. If you could find that and post it here, it will help me or one of the other experts here troubleshoot your situation.
The path is c:/Program Files/Macromedia/Dreamweaver MX 2004. Macromedia has 2 folders, Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Extension Manager. I am unable to locate any folder titled Application Installation of any files that look like error logs in either of these folders or in any of the subfolders within those two files.
Weird. I did a Google lookup myself. Could not find the error log location for DW. Can you try researching a bit to see if you could find the error log? That will contain valuable information on the crash. That's probably the only way we can decode and try to troubleshoot your issue.
Ok I'll keep looking but in the event that I don't find one and I have to bite the bullet and upgrade to a newer version can you recommend what would be the best solution and is it backwards compatable with this? I would like to be able to not lose everything that I currently have.
Dreamweaver CS6. The latest release. Especially for you - transitioning from MX2004 to CS6, you'll be entering a whole new dimension of web designing with a whole new range of possibilities that has been built into DW CS6.You can get a 30 day trial here: http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/dreamweaver.html
Adobe also offers a Cloud Subscription for all their Creative Suite softwares. You can learn more about it here: http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/creativecloud.html
All web-files you've made with MX2004 will be compatible with CS6. No need to worry about that.
I was unable to find the MX2004 crash logs, but I have ALWAYS been able to keep my MX2004 running by shutting down DW and renaming the Configuration folder.

Hi Ken, thanks for jumping in. Of course the easy fix didn't work so I am going to try the registry edit. I found that there are 2 files Deramweaver MX 2004 and Deramweaver MX 2004 bak. I assume the 2nd is a back up file. should I delete the backup file before i export the first file? and when I export it, where do I send it?
Hi -
Not sure what regedit your are planning.
Here's a page on the backup technique

Do you have the media to do a reinstall if necessary.
If you do that, be sure to visit the Updaters page for 7.0.1 and you might want to back up your Site definitions to a safe place.
