Deleting pictures from CS6, update site, picture still there

Sep 17, 2012 9:10 PM

Hi,

I was the proud owner of Front Page until Yahoo no longer supported Front Page.  Hard Drive crashed last year, took 9 months to rebuild, re-download site and original pictures just to find out that Yahoo no longer support Front Page.  Replacement was Expression Web 4, purchased it and was very similar to Front Page.  I am not an expert and I have an extensive collection of Canadian Militaru patches and other military items that I scanned and sort them up on my webpave.  I have over 19000 items, have my web page since 2003, needless to say when I lost my main drive then my backup, I was upset.  I mamaged to get everything going again, went back to scanning and updating my webpage, the I realised that my 128G hard drive was getting close of being full.  Bought new hard drive, reinstalled everything at the exception of Expression Web 4.  No longer available to download.  Emails sent, no replies.  I managed to get a copy and the 2 service packs.  Registration days close to expired.  Tried to update information, unable to.  Emails sent again, no replies.  Before buying Expression Web 4, I tried Dreamweaver but it seems that it was complicated, decided for Expression Web 4.  If I would have know that I was going to have a problem 8 months later, I would have probably purchased Dreamweaver then.

Sorry for the long intro.

I am trying Dreamweaver CS 6 now (trial version).  Managed to transfer webpage from Front Page and Expression Web 4.  Does Dreamweaver correct the format from other web designer programs?

Now the main question.  Under Front Page and Expression Web 4, I was able to expand a picture, as the picture on my webpage was a thumbnail using the ctrl key and having the cursor over the picture.  Is there a way to do the same under CS6?  Also I removed a picture permantly from one of my page.  I update the site and the picture still there using Explorer, but not shown on the design page.   How can I permanently delete a picture from the desing page so it doesn't show on my webpage?

Is there a special price for people updating CS6 from other software manufacturer?

my webpage is located at http://jfchalifoux.com

Thanks

All web design/ development programs have common formats such as .html, .php, etc... DW can open all common webfile formats.

In DW Design view, you can click on your picture, at the right bottom, you'll have resize boxes that you can click and drag to resize. Also, with your picture selected in Design view, you'll see the size of the picture in the Properties Inspector below your actual webpage where you can change the height & width of your image. You could also goto Code View in DW to manually read through the code and make necessary changes. For this, you need to know the basics of HTML & CSS.

Click & select the picture you'd like to delete from design view, hit delete on your keyboard. This will delete the picture from your webpage.

No, there is no special pricing for people moving to DW from another s/w manufacturer. There are special prices for Upgrades within Adobe families. Say, you have DW CS5.5, you can upgrade to DW CS6 by paying a minimal cost. Upgrades are possible in Adobe for all products upto 3 previous versions. You can upgrade to CS6 from CS3. You cannot upgrade from CS2.

    Trust this helps.

To add a bit to Sudarshan's excellent reply, don't forget to refresh your browser (F5) after making changes.  This ensures you're previewing the actual page and not a cached version from the browser's memory.

A very complex site you've got up there. I'd like to take this opportunity to appreciate your interest in creating such an exhaustive and comprehensive website!

First things first before you make a site with DW, 'Define a site' in DW. Follow this video to learn how to do it: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-dreamweaver-cs5/gs01-defining-a-new-si te/

This is key to ensuring you can edit your site seamlessly.

Within a browser, only thumbnails would appears, clicking on the picture, it would open another window with the original picture.

This can sometimes be very frustrating as your image opens in the same window/ triggers a new window or a tab. Why don't you consider using a lightweight plugin called Lightbox for this? Yes, it takes some getting used to but is very simple to use and works like charm. Here's the link: http://lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/

I also often within my previous programs, compare the actual picture with another item to ensure that it need to be added by using CTRL-click on the picture and the picture would display the original size.  I tried to do the same with CS6 but haven’t succeeded yet.

I don't think I understand what you're trying to achieve. Could you please elaborate?

I also tried to preview the picture with the CTRL-click but the program responded that I don’t have an editor to preview the file.  I have added ThumbPlus for the program but still doesn’t work.

Go into DW preferences > File Types/ Editors > Choose the extension of image, add a corresponding editor that you'd like to edit that file in. You can also customize a keyboard Shortcut. Open up DW Keyboard Shortcut preferences > Menu Commands > Modify > Image > Edit With - set your keyboard shortcut here to make your workflow smoother. Another option is, click on 'Design' view in DW, select your image, in the 'Properties' inspector below, you'll have an option to 'Edit' file with an application you've defined. This is Photoshop by default if you PS installed on your computer. You can customize this as I've mentioned here.

Another problem that I have it that I used to scroll the pictures to display the name.  Some of the names are quite long as I am actually  displaying the actual name of the unit, era, uniform, etc, etc.  I can only view the name or I should say a partial name.  15 characters +.jpg.

What do you mean by this? Where are you looking for your filename? The 'Properties' inspector in 'Design' view will give you a full filename under the section 'Src'. In 'code' view, needless to say, you can see the full image path and name. If you've defined the site in DW as I've mentioned in 1st step, you'll see your files under 'Files' panel. You can customize the column sizes here to match what you want.

I scanned a item in the appropriate directory, went to the appropriate location on the webpage, inserted the picture, picture was big, no way to autosize picture into a thumbnail.

Resizing images to make thumbnails - you can download DW extensions for this. But, its recommended you use a BatchResize program such as ResizeMe for Mac OS.

Something else that I found is that the picture has to be in the root directory of the webpage, why doesn’t it do it like the other program?  I don’t want to scan a picture in the right directory, then copy the file into the root directory.

Not necessarily. If you define a site in DW, you can choose an 'Image' folder where all your images has to be stored. By default, when you create a site in DW, you'll have an option of choosing where you want to store all relevant images. This will be a relative path to your main website html file. For example, if you have a folder called 'website' under which you have 'index.html', your images can be stored in 'website/images'. You can create multiple subfolders inside 'images' folder as per your requirement.

I also inherited a bunch of files from the previous progarms that I don’t think are being used with CS6.  vtibin, vticnf, vtilog, vtipvt, vtithx, logs and tmp.  Can these be deleted?

You can leave these files if they don't disturb your website hierarchy. Or, if you choose to, ensure you don't have any supporting files in these folders before you delete them.

Lastly, for a site of your magnitude, I'd recommend using a Content Management System (CMS), such as 'Concrete5' or 'Drupal'. Makes your life a whole lot easier. You can visit www.concrete5.org or www.drupal.org to learn more about these. They're free to use (Concrete5 has a 'Community Edition' which is Open Source). If I were you with a site of such magnitude, I'll use 'Concrete5' to manage it.

    Trust this helps.

Did you try to post a reply? There is no content here. I guess you've used 'reply to email' to post the response via e-mail. Sometimes, they dont make it here!

As far as I know, Yahoo hosting doesn't support Concrete 5 installation on your server.  But you could check with them to find out for sure.

I think the point Sudarshan was making is that for such a huge web site, using a server-side database for content would be much more efficient than having hundreds or thousands of separate static web pages.

Even WordPress which is widely supported by most web hosts (not sure about Yahoo), can handle much of what you require.  But switching to a CMS is a decision only you can make.  It would require you to learn something about PHP and MySql databases.

After a CMS is installed on your server, you would have almost no need for Dreamweaver.  Everything would be managed/edited on-line from the CMS's Admin panel.  One advantage of this is that you can edit your site from anywhere in the world.  You're not tied to software on your home computer.
