Audio turns red/has disappeared every time I re-open my project

Everytime I re-open my project some of the audio has dissappeared and turned red. It doesn't play the audio, and when you double-click it it shows up red in the source viewer with no audio. However, if you right click 'reveal in project' it finds the audio file in the media browser (without the in and out points).

 

The project is three seperate timelines/sequences which I've imported into the browser. I'm using bits of all three sequences and putting them in one new timeline.  The two other sequences which I've imported don't cause the same problem, and their audio works fine everytime I re-open hte project. It's just one of the sequences causing the problem. Meaning each time I re-open the project, I need to re-import the seqeunce and then copy and paste my audio files back onto the main/new timeline, which you can imagine is very frustrating and time consuming having to do this everytime I re-open the project.

 

If anyone knows how to fix this, or what's actually going wrong please let me know! Thanks!

    Never experienced this myself, but what may help is creating a new project and importing the existing project into this new project and take the time to let indexing, conforming and generating peak files finish before you do anything else.

    Just started a new project and imported the existing project, but it didn't work. Again, the same clips from that sequence have no/red audio!

    You mention Media browser...are you sure you "imported" the assets into the project panel?

    Yes I'm sure I imported them into the project panel.

    The audio files' properties are: .wav files, 48000 Hz - 24 bit - stereo.

    Hmmmm.

     

    This is not the first time someone has had unusual trouble with 24 bit audio in PP.

     

    Try using Audition to dumb then down to 16 bit.  See if that makes any difference.

    I have just come across the same problem as the poster. I've put together a short video demonstration of the problem in hopes that someone who knows what to look for might be able to discern what is going on when this happens.

    File type does not seem to play any role. Wav, Mov, and MP3 behave the same. Audio that is attached to video and standalone audio behave the same.

     

    I have copy/pasted sequences and footage without problem many times in the recent past. The problem is new.

     

    The only change to my system that could possibly have an effect is my recent upgrade from the trial version of CS6 to a licensed, rental version under the Creative Cloud. But because I had already installed Premiere Pro for the trial, there was no need to reinstall the program. I believe one update was downloaded sometime in the last week, as well.

     

    I have tried deleting all files in the Media Cache folder and all files in the Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files folder in hopes that Premiere Pro would 'rebuild' the conformed audio files once I reopened the projects, but this has not seemed to have any effect.

    I've actually come across some weird issues with audio since upgrading to CS6.  My workflow includes converting my files to another format.  It seems at random these files will lose their audio track when imported into Premiere.  Opening them in WMPlayer...VLC...anything outside of Premiere....the audio works. I also tried deleting the media cache files and XMP files generated after indexing/conforming but that didn't help.

     

    My only solution so far has been to convert my original files using AME 5.5 instead of 6.  Not sure if it is a real option but if you can, import the files into Premiere 5.0~5.5 and see what happens.  Good luck

    Thanks, jthebes. I will try duplicating the scenario in an older version and see if I get the same issue.

    ElJayBronx seems to have found the fix, and it's actually a slightly more elegant solution than copy/pasting.

     

    "had the same issue myself today, spent 1 hour on the phone with TS agent.

     

    It seems that the problem involves copied/pasted elements from one project to another (copied the data in the sequence, switched projects, copied said data into sequence in the newer project). All was well until after a save, then the file was salmon-red and the audio file in the Source Panel looked like a nice clay tennis court.

     

    TS suggested and it seemed to work, to import the sequence from the other project rather than copy/paste the files. I did this with the same footage then saved/closed several times with no additional problems.

     

    The original problem sequence, however, was toast.

     

    Looks like a bug to me.

    For those still struggling:

     

    1. Open the project you wish to bring files into (the "B" project).

    2. Select File>Import, then choose the Premiere Project that you wish to copy files from (the "A" project).

    3. You will be promted to choose whether to import the entire project or individual sequences. I selected the individual sequence that contained the files I need. Click 'OK'.

    4. As an added bonus, all the copied files are automatically placed into a bin for you. Double-click the sequence file and it should all be there.

    I've found a solution for this, at least in my case. For some reason Premiere sometimes fails to assign the audio channels.

     

    In a sequence with red "disconnected" audio, try this:

    1) Select all of the affected audio

    2) Right click and select "Audio Channels"

    3) Make sure the "Source Channel" drop-downs are all assigned to either a right or left channel.

     

    For some reason, these were all assigned to "none" each time this happened to me.

    When my timeline turned red and would not play back I knew it was a button I had hit by mistake. I was copying and pasting and hit <Alt B> by mistake. For some reason this Enables and conversely "Disables" a channel. If you look under the Edit / Enable Channels you will see the shortcut <Shift Alt B> to affect all channels. I think they added the shift button in there to avoid conflicts with the <Alt V> Paste function.

     

    Anyways...if the timeline turns red it just means that the timeline is "Disabled".

     

    Fix: Edit / Enable Channels

    the <Alt V> Paste function.

     

    CTRL+V is the normal Paste function.

     

    Neither ALT+B nor SHIFT+ALT+B do anything by default.  If those shortcuts are set up to do something, you did that manually.

     

    However, there doesn't seem to be any such shortcuts as enable/disable channels, so those shortcuts won't do that.

     

    There is also no menu command for Edit>Enable Channels.

     

    Are you sure you're in the correct forum?  This is for Premiere Pro.
