Clearly something has been corrupted but so far the following action has not resolved problem

1. Complete reinstallation of Office (I am using 2003)

2. "Repair Acrobat Installation" from Help Menu and system Restart (using Acrobat X v10.1.5)

If I try to enable the Acrobat AddIn in Word (either manually or through Acrobat) Word reports a runtime error.

Thanks for suggestion however I tried and it did not work.  I normally keep Macro Security Low anyway for my own macros.

No error numbers - I get the following Message from Word (or rather from MS Visual C) when I renable addin  in Word

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error

Program Files(x86)\...\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusula way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

The addin itself is which has to be disabled is described as:

acrobat pdfmaker office com addin (pdfmofficeaddin.dll)

Thank you - as I am on Ms 2003 and MSVC does not appear to be downloadable - I will delete all visual VSRunTime files and then Repair using my CD on the assumption that repair and indeed install does not copy in files that it sees are in place.

Failed on this

A complete reinstall of the whole of OFFICE11 where all files had been deleted - has made no difference.

Moreover I find that XL loaded with my normal VB programs also fails

I get System Error &H80004005 (-2147467259).

when I try and delete what may be offending code and Save

I get Compile error: Out of memory  ... in relation to a VBA line Dim x as New EventClassModule

Due to some automatic code that starts up with the Workbook

This VBA code has been operating fine on an almost daily basis for several years.

So I have some problem that seems to be outside a full configure of OFFICE11 which may or may not be connected to Adobe Acrobat addin - which started my investigation.
