Distiller epilogue/prologue files

This may not be the place to ask this, but I've had no luck in the Acrobat forum.

When using Distiller, normally a PDF will be generated at the dimensions set in the joboptions file under default page size.

My understanding is that if you go to the advanced section in the joboptions file and turn on Process DCS Comments, then check Resize Page and Center Artwork for EPS files, the PDF that is generated should be at the size of the original documents and not the default page size set in the joboptions file.

Unfortunately, this is not what I'm seeing.  Every PDF generated is set to the default page size.

Is there a way to control this via the epilogue or prologue files?

Thanks.

Perhaps they are not valid EPS files. Open a small one in NotePad and copy/paste all of the intial header lines (the lines from %! through all the following lines starting %, stopping when the first line with no % at the start appears.)

This shows a file of 288 points by 648 points (4 x 9 inches).

I made it back into a valid EPS by taking the first lines and adding some, to get

%!PS-Adobe-3.1 EPSF-3.0

%ADO_DSC_Encoding: Windows Roman

%%Title: Untitled-1

%%Creator: Adobe InDesign CS5.5 (7.5)

%%For: mbrogdon

%%CreationDate: 10/18/2013, 1:50 PM

%%CropBox: 0 0 288 648

%%BeginProlog

%%EndProlog

%%Page: 1 1

clippath 1 0 0 setrgbcolor fill showpage

This was processed into a 4 x 9 inch PDF, but any error in the %% comments led to the EPS stuff being ignored. Turn on the option "Log DSC warnings" and see if it reports anything.

I replaced what I sent you with what you sent to me, minus the "clippath 1 0 0 setrgbcolor fill showpage" line and it worked.

Even though this worked, I'm not sure what would be a plausible way to make this work with all of the other EPS files coming out of production.  Any ideas?

I received several DSC warnings:

So, significant errors in the EPS. What is making them? I suspect if it's Adobe software, Adobe won't be very interested as they see EPS as an obsolete workflow and will want you to export PDF.

These are EPS files coming from InDesign CS5.5.

I suspect that Distiller 6 is too old to understand the coding in the EPS files and because of that, a significant part of the automation of our workflow is now shot.

Adobe no longer sells Distiller Server and LiveCycle is way outside our budget.

I appreciate your help.

No, I disagree. The rules of EPS have not changed in many, many years. The fault probably lies in the EPS, not in Distiller.

Interesting...

I do know that these EPS files will Distill properly when run  through newer versions of Distiller, specifically Distiller X.  I just  tested with Distiller 7 and it seems to work there as well.

In Distiller 7, I turned on DCS logging and there are a few errors, but they are different than those from Distiller Server 6.

All of them are Missing Float, using 0.0.  Found: %%BeginFile: MMFauxFont.prc and
CMYK and RGB customer color errors, Missing float, using 0.0.

By "these" I mean the files exported directly from InDesign.
