I guess you're using 11.02.
Switch back to 11.01 and you problem is gone.

I am using FH MXa version 11.0.2.

Another thing I noticed was that when I changed the type size from 7pt to 10 pt, the characters showed up. This has been driving me nuts.

So you think I can download an upgrade to 11.01 from 11.0.2?

Are you using Open Type fonts?

Are you exporting from FH as PDF, or are you printing to Postscript file and
Distilling? The latter is by far the most reliable method.

If you're on a Mac, you may be able to clear up the problem by deleting your
font caches. Font Nuke and Yasu are utilities that do this.

It could be the fonts. We have two fonts that this happens with. If I
need to use those fonts then I have to convert the type to paths before
exporting out of Freehand.

The font I need to use is Novarese a Postscript Type 1 font.

I did a test using Novarese, Arial, Times New Roman and Times. The Novarese quotes were blank, Arial and Times New Roman worked and Times showed the quote marks as boxes.

I always print to a ps file and then generate my pdfs using different resolution settings in Acrobat Distiller.

I will try and delete the Font Cache.

After much frustration and playing around with every Freehand setting imaginable, I think that I've reached a solution to this... at least for now.

Simply, exporting the file from Freehand directly to pdf (rather than to .ps and distilling the fie) seems to fix the problem of missing characters. And the resolution looks great.

I had this problem too. Fixed by closing down and restarting computer. It resets everything if you have been creating large files ... FH can get a bit antsy.
