CS3 - Where are all the UI components?

Apr 23, 2007 10:40 AM

1. I bought CS3 and Accordion was not in the default components!?! WTF?

So I'm trying to get the Accordion from Flex into a SWC so I can use it in CS3.
And I can't get it to work in Flash CS3. Are there any guides on how to share classes between these two apps?

I've noticed this as well... There are a significant number of V2 components that did not get upgraded to V3. This is VERY annoying... Does anybody know what happened to these components and why they are not included in Flash CS3?

I would very much like an explanation from Adobe if they plan to release more UI-components.

I was getting ready to start migrating a rather large application from AS2 to AS3 and finds that core components is not availiable.

The missing components are: Accordian, Alert, DateChooser, DateField, Menu, MenuBar, Tree, Window. Of those I really miss the Tree the most.

Its just silly, since the speed and structure of AS3 invite to more real applications in flash, but the missing UI ruins it.

Has anyone recieved an answer to this question yet? Perhaps in another thread?

I am going to attempt to port the Tree control from the Flex framework into CS3.
Would hate to spend a great deal of time on this and have Adobe come up with these in a new release just after going to the trouble.

It's difficult to understand why these components, which have been available in AS3 for a year with the Flex framework, did not make it into the Flash Authoring tool. I'd also like an exlanation from Adobe on wether they are planning to only support the developer community that uses their FlexBuilder tool. Perhaps they are phasing out the developers who wish to use the Flash Authoring tool?

Glad to hear it Bentley. Clarification on the future of data components/classes in Flash CS3 for actionscript 3 would be best. Specifically the DataSet and RDBMSResolver component classes. Looking forward to it.

So, its been 3 weeks. I'm almost done migrating 13.000 lines of AS2 to AS3, now I'll start implementing my own tree and menu.

I'll guess 3 weeks with no answer means. -"Adobe expects the community to supply key components but are not shy about charging the big bucks for the package" Shame on you Adobe.

It would be nice to know what the status of the missing components is. I'm holding off purchasing Flash CS3 because of this. I'm specifically missing the date chooser and the popup window. I also would like to see the missing connection debugger replaced as well. I don't like the idea of having to purchase a 3rd party app just to debug my remoting calls. I think Adobe release CS3 before all of the apps were ready.

Agreed, but unfortunately I do not have any information i can publicly release regarding the UI components or an of the data components.

As for remoting, we will be releasing some information on updating the AS2 Remoting components via a technote in the near future. That information will include info the community can use to update the components to AS3.

We will not, however, be releasing the code for the Netconnection Debugger.

And that, for now, is all I know.

Thanks for the update Bentley. I guess it's a bit difficult for people to understand why an upgrade actually has less features than the previous version. I may just see if I can locate a copy of Flash 8 to update my copy of MX 2004 and just forget about moving to CS3.

    WHAT???
quote: "unfortunately I do not have any information i can publicly release regarding the UI components or an of the data components"

    What about that!

Adobe charges $500 for that CS3 suite update???

All this waiting time and wasted money to find a lame and weak flash set of components.
You people from flash team should go visit your friends from FLEX and may be get some training or advice.

    They get the job done!

DO NOT BUY THE Flash CS3 upgrade!!!
    It is an horrible screw-up!
I am trying to get refund from Adobe, the process (they say) will take up to 3 months!

I'm a bit shocked that components would be removed in a new version. It just seems like the product was rushed to the market or its just a major oversight. Especially on the webservice component missing. ?!

We DO need to get an official notice from adobe that this is being worked on. Flex is not an option for some because
of the obvious lack of a timeline and 130K initial download size.

Just to clarify, because it sounds like some of you might be missing point: nothing was removed from CS3. If you are looking for the Accordion component you should use an ActionScript 2.0 document, *not* an ActionScript 3.0 project. AS2.0 and AS3.0 are completely different, every component in AS3.0 had to be completely remade, and some components that exist in AS2.0 currently have not been remade with an equivalent in AS3.0. Create an "ActionScript 2.0 Document" for all the old components. There's nothing wrong with using AS2.0 still, either.

It still was, however, a major disappointment to me that some of these components didn't make it to AS3.0. Flex is definitely more in the spotlight for AS3 development.

Great... now the ONLY person at Adobe who is fighting for our cause is leaving Adobe! I got this email from Bentley today...
    --
I wanted to let you know that today is my last day at Adobe, and I won’t be continuing any work on the component question. Flash team is aware that it’s an issue and I’m fairly certain someone will follow up on it (and I’ll include it in my internal ‘things you guys need to follow up on’ mail…)

hopefully this doesn't get swept under the rug once our go-to guy is gone, but I'm willing to bet this is NEVER resolved... *sigh*

    Here's the history:

    1. Macromedia develops Actionscript 3.
    2. Adobe buys Macromedia.
    3. Adobe immediatley releases a new Flex version (their own product) with AS3.
    4. Nine months later Adobe releases the new version of the Flash Authoring Tool.

The new Flash CS3 has been transformed into an Adboe product, with the UI of their other products and capability to import Photoshop and Illustrator files.

As a long-time user of Macromedia and Adobe products it appears that Adobe intends to make their own Flex tool the future authoring tool for Actionscript development and turn the Flash tool into a design specific tool.

Last Friday I sold all my Adobe stock.

This is really strange? Seems like the component set would be at least the same, if not better. No mention in the help file either? Has anyone tried to contact Richard Galvan, Flash Technical Product Manager???

The ONLY reason why flash is so popular is that you can design and build cool applications. If you want to design only, use illustrator or if you want to animate only you have after... but flash is the ONLY program that amazingly does everything together... keeping AJAX on second place... until now, that they didn't put some of the most useful components... shame on adobe, I'd have waited 6 more months for a complete release…

well, what i can say... still waiting.

beside i found somekind of bridge between AS2 - AS3
    http://www.jumpeyecomponents.com/Flash-Components/Various/ActionScript -Bridge-91

and using this hack, u can put AS2 Accordion or other AS2 Components to AS3 projects.

give me a sign if u know something more about AS3 components
    regards

Really think at times Adobe seems to be non-responsive to developers on matters like this and they should resolve the issue. I think that too much emphasis is being placed on the Flex line and not Flash. But, then again I think the Adobe Developer Connection was a great move on Adobe's part. The biggest issue I have with the product line is a move to less documentation on the products and the need to buy a library of books to find ways to use the products. Hope Adobe will began to support the developers more on the issues like this, it really creates negative feelings about Adobe that would otherwise be unwarranted.

Another really strange item is Adobe's purchase of InterKat and wanting $300.00 more dollars for items that should be part of the Dreamweaver product to start. Adobe Dreamweaver Developer Toolbox should be part of the Dreamweaver product for free or at least a reduced price for CS2 - CS3 owners. $300.00 is over priced for people who have thousands of dollars already invested.

Adobe does seem to be taking a greater interest in the thoughts of the developers, but in the end not much has been done.

You can at least get a tree component from Yahoo at

    http://developer.yahoo.com/flash/

I didn't care too much about the other missing components but the tree was a must have.

    All,

I am still working on getting a public statement about this. I would not hold your breath for any development of these components in the CS3 timeframe. But complaints to the wish form (www.adobe.com/go/wish) for your favorite component are read by the right people.

In the meantime, here's a list I have of 3rd party AS3 versions of some of these components:
