cant get cc to update

when i open cc it says an update for cc is required i press update it gets half way through and then tells me that i have cc running and to close it so it can update. the info on the forums says shut down and try again but i am having no joy. considering i am paying for the big package and cant access any updates is annoying. you would think that adobe would have a section on their site for downloads for existing customers and not just to attract new ones.

any help would be very grateful

Marc are you receiving a message about a conflicting process?  If so have you utilized the task manager/activity monitor to close/quit the process?  Which operating system are you using exactly? 

Finally you may want to try restarting the computer and applying the update again.
