Editing images from the library.

Jan 7, 2008 12:29 PM

Hello,
I'm very new to Captivate and am teaching myself on the fly. I watched the little tutorials that are available within Captivate and one mentioned that you can use the library to edit images in photoshop then update them automatically into that slide in the Captivate project.

When I open my library the edit button says edit with ImageReady. I tried that and saved the image, but it only lets me save it as a PNG which I then can not import into the library. I ended up opening the image in ImageReady using it to send the image to PhotoShop, saving at is a GIF and then just deleting the background of the slide and adding the image to the slide.

This slide also had a click button with a hover-over text message and a failure text message which I then had to get moved to the front so they show when you click on the page or hover-over the click button. That was a pain as I had to move the background image then use bring to front then move the background image back and selecting all three items (click box and 2 text boxes) was not easy.

There has got to be a better way. Any ideas?

Hi Nikki@work and welcome to our community

When you right-click an image in the library, what it opens with is often unassigned. I believe the actual image file type determines which editor is used (assuming one has already been assigned, which it may). But normally you see "Edit with..." as being the only option you have. And once you choose that, you then choose the desired editor. So even though ImageReady is already there, you should also be able to right-click and choose "Edit with..." even if it's already been associated. Then open the image in whatever application you choose.

I have seen where once the change has been made in the other application and you close the app and save the changes, the image fails to automatically update in Captivate. But if that happens, it's pretty easy to right-click the image and choose Update... from the context menu to synch the changes.

This also points out another thing you should be aware of. When you update images that were added from your hard drive, you probably think you are only changing the images that reside in the .CP file. But what you are really doing is updating the image in the location where you inserted it from! So if it's important that you maintain a pristine copy of said image, be sure you first save it as a new file name so you maintain the original copy!

Hopefully this helps a smidge... Rick

Image editors such as ImageReady typically create new layers in the document whenever you copy/paste or add elements. Captivate backgrounds are BMPs, which do not support layers, hence you are being prompted to save as .PNG, which does support layers.

If you flatten the image before saving, no change in format is required and Captivate's automatic update feature should work as expected.
