How to set profile to unknown phones

OK I know that you can design content to a known device but I am building a website for a band and they want their fans to be able to download content from the website for cellphones and PDAs. My questions are:

#1 How can I design for unknown devices?
#2 Do (Can) I design by a cell providers specs?
#3 Is there another solution if I can not do this in Device Central?
#4 How do record labels provide content for the fans?

Ciao,

if you need to detect which phone is looking at the mobile site and based on that download the right content you might want to use WURFL.

WURFL is a Device Description Repository, a catalogue of mobile device information and a framework for adaptation of mobile applications.

Just check out their site for all the right info which is more specific to you. :)

Well still there are too many mobile devices and does Wurfl can identify all the mobile devices. Even can be identified preparing the content still will be a problem.

Thanks to everyone for posting to this topic, but my question was never answered.
I know WURFL can detect the device but that will not be helpful in the design. I need
to make sure the ringtones, wallpaper, etc. for this band can be download on as many
devices as possible. So do I go blind with my design and wish for the best or is there
a process in design for unknown devices. Please help my deadline is coming soon.

Wurfl is being used by everyone in the mobile blogging platform. Even mowser is being used the same way I believe.
