Premiere Elements doesn't work well with mixed video sources, so I wouldn't recommend trying to use AVIs, MOVs, MP4s, etc, in the same project.

In fact, I wouldn't recommend using WMVs or MP4s at all for source files. They tend to bungle up the whole project.

As for AVIs and MOVs, they each come in so many different flavors, codecs and resolutions, it's really impossible to give specific advise without knowing what model of camcorder each came from and how you got it into your computer.

Once you know that, part 1 of my Basic Training tutorials (which John so graciously linked to above) will show you how to properly set up a project.

And setting a project correct is the single most important step in building a project in Premiere Elements!

Thanks again for your reply. Really great having someone who knows their stuff!

I have started watching your excellent series but unfortunately it doesn't help me at stage one as it seems that Prel can only work if I'm importing from a camcorder, which I'm not. I'm a TV anchor in the UK and am trying to edit some footage which I have on DVD from various studios, which I have ripped using handbrake as an mp4 file using video codec H.264 (x264), framerate 'same as source' Variable Framerate, constant video quality RF: 18.

Picture Size: source: 720x576, Output: 702x574, Anamorphic: 748x574 Strict

Picture Cropping: Auto 0/2/10/8

The footage is all from large scale cameras in TV studios, so none of the presets seem to apply anyway.

The MPEG-4 movie file is now on my MacBook Air hardrive with the following info, when I click on 'Get Info' ...

Dimensions: 748 × 574

Codecs: H.264, AAC

Color Profile: SD (6-1-6)

Duration: 48:10

Audio Channels: 2

Total bit rate: 1,658

Any further help would be massively appreciated, thanks Steve, and then I'll carry on watching your tutorials for the best training!

If you plan to edit your video in Premiere Elements, I would not recommend you use Handbrake or other convertor to convert your files. Most likely you will only convert them into a format Premiere Elements can't work with. And MP4s output from Handbrake are definitely a video format Premiere Elements can't work well with!

If you''re using DVD video, your best option would be to start a project using the Settings for Hard Disk Camcorder (as I show you in part 1 of my 8 part tutorial series).

Then, rip the video from the DVD by placing the disc in your computer's disc drive and using Get Media/From DVD Camcorder or PC DVD. Be sure to allow time for the program to conform the files before you start editing.

You should then have no problems editing your video.

Are those "movie" DVD's that you can put in a DVD player at a TV and they start, like a commercial DVD?

Or, are those "data" DVD's with some kind of files from the "large scale cameras in TV studios" that do not make a playable DVD?

If the DVD is a regular "movie" disc, it will have VOB files and Steve gave you the process

If otherwise, you will need to provide more information about exactly what is on the disc (ie-file ending and codec)

And, some VOB reading... (not all for Elements, but general information)
