hello we a huge book of BW lineart tables and desks and stuff.
the client now wants a blue fill behind them all.
i can find no way of doing this short of taking the pen tool and connecting all the points to get an overall shape.
this gets even harder because a lot of the desks have round parts on their outline.
we need this project to take less than a year ![]()
thanks!
Hello! This seems like a task for Live paint: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/illustrator/cs/using/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e0 7d0100196cbc5f-6507a.html#WS119D698E-3460-4308-9BA3-010789D5FD19a
You could try the Plugin Concatenate: http://rj-graffix.com/software/plugins.html
There are also scripts like "Join Reasonably" which might do that job. http://park12.wakwak.com/~shp/lc/et/en_aics_script.html#join_reasonabl y
In case you're on WIndows, you could also try if this plugin has a module that can join the paths for you: http://www.ika.ethz.ch/plugins/index.html
The documentation contains images and you can try this link, it has an English documentation: http://www.ika.ethz.ch/plugins/publi/pdf/2006_werner_hutzler.pdf
Here's a method I've used for that kind of thing since years before the flood-fill feature (LivePaint) existed. Carefully record an Action that performs the numbered operations. Once you've built the Action, you can perform it on each of your desks with one click:
Often, my actual working version of the Action may include a couple of extra steps. For example, "naming" the original line art group by giving it a value in the Attributes palette's Note field allows it to be targeted for selection so that it can be grouped with the resulting backfill path. Or, I may include an Offset Path command to create a halo around the object so that stacks of partially overlaping objects in an exploded diagram read better.

just tried that and it worked but not exaclty perfect.
the expand appearance option was grayed for me
the stroke pallette was inactive at the point where i should have done steps 4 and 5 there
some objects had a leftover white fill in one of their parts that i had to go and manually fill after the action was done
pretty good, though. be super great if you could export and share your action here so i could try it.
thanks
i am going to try live paint now to see if it's any faster
