Adobe flash or Reader does not install

I downloaded both Adobe flash player and Adobe Reader (at different times) and installed them under administrator entry with my firewall and antivirus software momentarily off.    During each install; everything appears to work well until I look for the program; they are nowhere to be found.    What went wrong?
