You can use Edit>Edit Colors>Convert to Grayscale.

    Sure!

Go to Edit -> Edit Colors -> Convert to Grayscale

    recolorToGrayscale_01.jpg

Or go to Edit -> Edit Colors -> Recolor Artwork and choose Grays in Color Groups

    recolorToGrayscale_02.jpg

    Hope that helps.

Personally, I prefer Edit -> Edit Colors -> Recolor Artwork and choosing Grays in Color Groups

because I can then edit each color independently and choose right gray for it.

In recolro art from the preset or in the color selection field either choose 1 color job and select black if not automatically selected or enter 1 for the number of colors.

I do see yyour problem then. All you have to do is make a sqaure of 100 K copy it change to 0% k move it a specified distance make a blend with say 8 steps. expand make a new color group all willbe a tint of K

then select your and click the new color box go to swatches and pick a gray.
