Not search engine readable, big setback

May 27, 2012 6:00 AM

When we add one of our research reports online, they are not readable.  In order to get the content onto our site we have to eport as text and then plant it in text to the webpage...

If it can export the text shouldnt it be able to read it too??  Seems like the same technology

I looked at the page but it doesn't seem to be a PDF, or link to any PDF files. What is the bit that needs to be indexed?

Google has no issue with indexing pdfs that contain text (as opposed to scans).

As TSN says, there aren't any obvious PDF files on that page, only a series of JPEG images of the report pages (which I assume you have exported from the PDF file). Images cannot  be indexed by search engines, they only store text in their databases.

    • If you link to the PDF file itself, and it has no user password (i.e. no security to prevent the file being opened) then it will usually be indexed by the major search engines.
    • If you apply a user password but leave the metadata in plain text, that will be indexed even though the rest of the content is not.
    • An owner password (preventing alteration) may or may not block indexing, it depends on the settings you choose and the particular search engine.
    • If the PDF file is a scan and hasn't been OCRed there is of course nothing to index.
