Adobe Community: Can't open Adobe documents on iPad 3

I'm sorry for the issues you're having. Are you trying to open PDFs using Adobe Reader on your iPad?

Yes, I am using Adobe reader. Is there something I need to do to get email and safari to recognize it?

When you tap the document in Mail, iOS should open the PDF in their Preview window. There should be an "Open In..." button in the top toolbar. If you tap that button, yoiu should be given the option to open in Adobe Reader.

I have tried that and it takes me to Safari and a window pops up telling me I need Adobe Reader. If I hit yes it takes me to the App Store and has a Adobe Reader on it which I have already downloaded. If I hit cancel I stay in Safari and I have tried to use the toolbar to open it but it doesn't give me the Adobe option. If I am in email and hold my finger over the link it pops up a window which gives me the option to open it but again no Adobe option.

I have read the instructions that come with the Adobe app so I know how it is suppose to work. It appears it is not communicating with email or Safari. I have removed Adobe Reader and reinstalled it and turned the iPad off and back on but no success.

Your problem sounds like a problem with the website you are visiting. Some websites attempt to detect whether or not a Reader plugin is available. There is no such concept as a "plugin" for Safari on iOS so this detection (from the website) will fail. The website needs to simply return the whole PDF for you to download and then Safari will present you the option of opening it in a PDF viewer like the Adobe Reader. Is it possible to share the website you are visiting (and/or a URL for the PDF)?

What apps do show up in the "open in" box? Are you sure you are opening a PDF? Have you tried swiping contents of the box to scroll it? Many people don't know that the "open in" menu is scrollable (I didn't the first time this happened to me!).

Here is web site where I had the problem.

Since then I received another such email with a pdf extension and it worked!

I got this reply from Adobe on my problem with the above link.

"Thanks John,

I looked at your screenshots, and it appears that the issue you are seeing is that the website you are trying to get the documents from is not compatible with the iPad. Unfortunately, many websites have still not yet updated to work with the new mobile systems, but since tablet sales are increasing rapidly, and should overtake laptops in the next 3 years, that will change.

The website seems to be using an HTML feature called “Object Embedding” which only works on desktop computers. The website seems to also be presenting a dialog to the user letting them know that to view the embedded PDF they need to install Adobe Reader, and forwards the user to our standard Adobe Reader download page.

The net is that I don’t know how to make this work for you, unless you can find a way to make that website give you a link to just download the PDF directly.

the problem I am having has to do with PDF file on the iPad. I can read them with other apps..BUT when I go to the OPEN IN box Adobe Reader is not shown in the list. Serveral others are

See this screen shot Lower left cornor.. What an I doing wrong???

Ahh - it looks like this application is trying to be clever. First, some background: Some PDF Viewer applications (like the PDF view in the iPad mail and iBooks) cannot view annotations. This application is offering you an option to share the file "as is", or with a "flattened" version of the annotations it has created. These "flattened" annotations lose the ability to be edited, but they would be viewable in applications like iBooks.

Bottom line, if you choose either of the two options presented there, my guess is that you will then be presented with an option to open in other pdf viewers (including Adobe Reader) that you have installed on the device.

The Adobe Reader supports viewing most annotation types, so you should be able to choose "as is". Please let me know if this works!

YES..YES..that did it when I select either option, I then have the option to select apps including ADOBE
