Hello all,
As a newcomer to this type of color grading I am trying to understand the complete workflow and I could really use some help. I sent a full (small) timeline over to Speedgrade from Premiere and got through the grading process alright. But, I can't figure out how to get useable highquality files back out. What is it I am supposed to do with the entire folder of files SG outputs? How do I get my now graded clips re-linked in Premiere?
Help?
Thanks!
Ben
Hey Ben,
generally speaking the Colorgrading Process is the last pass in your workflow. Depending on your Fileformat, you can use SG before Pr, too.
So the render out of SG should be done with the highest quality. It depends on your workflow.... and delivering.
To give you an Idea.
1) Edit in Premiere
2) use send2speedgrade when using (compressed material like 5d / 7d) or Export a EDL (recommend if working with rawfiles/ editing on proxis - R3D, Alexa, Phantom, Ikonoskop etc)
3) apply color correction
4) Render out a DPX sequence out of SG (for storing on drives etc for further uses)
5) Render out to specific file format: f.e. h264 for vimeo HD (target data rate: 5000) and 720p
In speedgrade's output tab you can create any output formats (click on 'others...' next to 'format & options' dialog)
If you want to go back to Premiere, you can import the DPX sequence out of SG (Step4) - I would recommend DPX, because if you go back to Pr, I suggest you'll likely to render out of Pr again, so to preserve Quality I recommend working on uncompressed DPX sequences in this case.
A RAW workflow could be:
1) Import all RAW files into SG
2) apply first light
3) Render out Proxies (f.e. 720p, h264) with TC embedded
4) Import proxies to PR for editing (due hardware limitations its often not convenient editing in 2/4K res)
5) export the EDL to SG
6) in SG relinking via EDL to all RAW files
7) apply full res 2/4K grading
8) render out Final format
What is your endformat? where do you want to deliver it?
Hope that helps.

This is my workflow, if for is your interesting.
When I have finished edit in Premiere, I export a DPX sequence of all timeline (render all effects except titles and fades) together an EDL. In SG import the sequence and EDL, grade the program, and export to quicktime uncompressed or targa files (unfortunately the options for export are limited).
Back to Premiere, I import the SG render for titles, fades, final audio (worked in another sala), and export a final master, Bluray, DVD or mp4 for Internet.
This workflow is very simple but very reliable and works fine for me.
I just finished a short piece in CS6 and went Prelude > Premiere > Speedgrade (Send to Speedgrade option) > Output DPX sequence > Import DPX sequence in AE for other finishing type work > Import the comp via Dynamic Link in Premiere to link back up to my audio.
Worked like a charm. Hope that helps. You'll want to use DPX (industry standard) out of Speedgrade for the most part just to make it easy on yourself. AE handles DPX sequences just fine.
Actually you can...
This was Speedgrade's original purpose as a $30K-ish Iridas product: dailes grades and offline edit proxies. Adobe has no clear instructions on this that I've found but the 2011 Iridas manual says when you output to retain the source timecode and file name but render your timeline to individual clips, do the following:
Under file name, select via the dropdown menu: "Src.PathElement.0"
Set Time Code Source to "source"
Then import as usual in Premiere
I just tested with some Ikonoskop footage I was playing with and it worked as designed. I haven't tested with clips with audio yet to see if it handles audio as well.
Can you be a little more specific about importing the material back in Premiere? Right now I m offlining my clips in Premiere and I m trying to relink them to my graded material with the same names. But it doesnt seem to work out. Premiere always relinks to the old material.
Thanks!
Thomas
Premiere's had a relinking issue since 4 if your new files are in the same parent directory as your original footage. Put your graded files in a completely different parent directory and use "relink" as usual. If that's not the problem, I don't know as I've not had other issues with relinking beyond that.
