LR 4.1 - Book Disappears

Jun 6, 2012 4:54 AM

I have been working on a book over the past few weeks. I finally had it pretty much the way I wanted - 48 pages and over 140 images. On a final runthru, I noticed an image that I wanted to improve. I selected it in the filmstrip, went to the Develop module, made the changes, and returned to the Book module. Book was gone. The cover was still there, and the first image in the book, but it was now 2 pages instead of 48. I'm going to be very reluctant to try that again unless someone can help me understand what went wrong. Thanks

Colin

Did you use the "Create Saved Book" button before moving to the Develop module?

It sounds like your catalog may have become damaged or corrupt in some way. I can't reproduce the behavior despite making multiple attempts to do this on purpose.

Ah, that could explain a lot. Not sure exactly what you did there, but there are many keyboard shortcuts tied to even non-modified keys. So I take back the "corrupt catalog" explanation and go with the "unknown number of applied keyboard shortcuts in unknown order results in undesired effect" explanation instead. Backups are not always there to protect us from system failure, but from our own mistakes as well.

Whether or not it is too easy for something like this to happen is a moot point. This kind of thing can happen in any application and happens to me all the time when I use a web browser. I think I'm typing in a box, next thing I know I've gone back several pages in my history.

    Hi Colin,

    Of course you are right!

The only thing which MAY result in only a few pages left in a book is if you have selected pages and deleted them.

Everything else I call a bug. Unpardonable in a mature software product.

Which the book module in LR 4.1 still is not...

Don't use it if you value your time & effort.

Stick to the proprietary software of your preferred printing agency and you will have another step in your workflow, but many more layout options and usually something pretty reliable.

Book saved, lost all pages yet the pictures had the number above indivcating that they are beeing used in a book. So frustrating.

Red Alien, Try switching to another module (Library, Develop, etc), close Lightroom, and then relaunch. Then return to the Book module and see if it displays correctly.

I tried everything I could think of to find my book, including all the suggestions from this forum, nothing worked. I had no choice but to start from scratch again the next day and rush to finish it. Still I am going to miss the very importatnt deadline of the actual birthday

I've had the same problem happen numerous times now, even after I updated to 4.1.
Though it does seem to corrolate with text being inputted into my book.
Soon as I started doing that, everything started to reset and dissapear.

To try and avoid this though I even created duplicates of my working book to avoid loosing it but they all came back as a blank template!
All the photos still say they are placed though. This is a massive bug and has wasted a good many hours of work.

It would be good to be able to save the book layout itself externally as a file type to avoid this.

I had two books that I worked on. I wrote 'had', because today both ones completely disappeared. I'm so disappointed. I have the LR 4.1.

Did the collections that house book disappear? Or are they still there but no longer have any images in them?

Do you have backups of your catalog to retrieve the books?

The collection of photos stay within the book file itself. The book itself doesn't dissapear...
But all layouts made dissapear and revert back to the default

As if I'm going to backup my catalogue everytime I progress in a book.
Even if I did have a backup of the catalogue with the book still in it...there is no point to continue to work in the module if I am destined to loose it at some point.
It's a bug that needs to be fixed....clear and simple. Let us know when it has.

I've had to resort to exporting and using inDesign to lay everything out.

The same for me. The books as collections are still there, the added photos are in the collections (I can see those in the bottom panel), but the books are empty. LR v4.1 cleared all the contents. I lost the layouts and all the text I wrote. Now, I can see empty covers and two empty pages. That's all.

I have a week old backup, so I can recover some parts, but I lost everything what I did in the last 7 days (LR offered a backup after emptying my books).

I think the 'create backup after every modification' (I can say every day) is not a solution. The bug is still there in the LR v4.1, please solve it.

Itsmeriz and daphot, it sounds like you are describing two different behaviors:

    • All layouts cleared to default, but correct number of pages still available
    • All pages removed, just covers and a couple pages left.

In order for us to fix this, we have to be able to reproduce it exactly on our side so we can find the flaw in the code. If different people are encountering different problems, it suggests not a product bug but glitch encountered on an individual's computer due to a possibly corrupt catalog file or preferences.

Can you both post screen shots of how things look now to compare?

No I only get the cover and two pages as well. If you want to replicate the bug try making multiple pages and input and decent amount of text on each one. Play around also with the adjustments to the text as well. Soon as I started working with text this happened.

I think it would take a long time and a lot of luck for Brett to replicate the problem! I have experienced it a number of times, and it occurs rarely and without an obvious pattern. As Brett requests, please post screenshots.

Also, make sure the filmstrip is visible in the screenshots. Do the thumbnails have a little number showing how often the picture is used in the book?

I agree, it will be so bit hard and difficult to find the source of the problem. I wrote a PM to Brett about the screenshot, but I don't think it would help him, because the books look exactly the same when you start a new book (without using Auto layout). There are empty covers and 2 empty pages. As the books are empty, there aren't little numbers above the thumbnail photos, because the photos aren't in the books themselves. They are in as collection, but not used on any pages (because the books are empty).

And what it really interesting, I had two unfinished books. I worked on one of them, I moved a processed photo into the book I actually worked on and in the Library module when I clicked on the 'open book' arrow, LR switched to the Book module, opened the book, but it was completely empty (like when you start a new book). And when I clicked onto my another unfinished book, that was empty too! I did not do any modification in this second book, but LR emptied it too which is not good at all.

You sure there are no numbers, even when you make th filmstrip bigger? If so we could have two separate errors. I get the same default pages as you, but in the filmstrip there are numbers so it looks like the pictures are still allocated to the page.

The numbers showing the allocations to the page are there still initally once the bug occurs, but they eventually dissapear once the 'book' realises that none of the pages have any photos now. Like I said using text was the only factor I could see that made the error occur. Can anybody say they weren't using text in their photobook and this happened still? double

This image attached is an example of what I would have had done on a page before it crash and lose everythingCapture.JPG
I'd have maybe 10 double page spreads like this. Always using that 2 image and 1 text box layout on one of the spread pages.
I believe it occured when I perhaps went to the develop module to edit a photo and come back.
When this happened the screen would go blank and I wouldn't be able to see anything in the book module, not even a blank layout. Just all the tool/menu bars around.
I would then have to restart lightroom and when it openned back up all books would revert to default state.

I'll do some testing along the lines of using different styles of text, see if I can recreate. If text is the root cause, I would suspect it's tied to a specific font (as opposed to using a certain size or other text attribute). Anybody using non-system standard fonts?

You make good points, Colin. I would add that a further safeguard is to right click and duplicate the book you're working on.

Colin, careful or not why would I even risk to use it if it might happen? No body wishes to do hours of work to lose it all.

Alright backing up every time I close can minimise the issue but it’s not efficient at all. But thanks for the suggestion I’ve changed my setting.

John I did duplicate the book to try and save it but all books become blank/default when this bug occurs. So it’s not a solution.

In my case, duplicating the books would not help, because I lost the content both of my 2 existing books. Not only that one I worked on, both ones.

I started to backup my catalog more regularly to protect my works.

Sharad, the product manager for Lightroom, has just posted a new blog entry on this book issue. It includes specifics on what can cause it and how to avoid it. The team has tracked down a reproducible set of steps that can be used to nail down a fix in a future update to Lightroom 4.
