I am working on a layout for my site, and am not the best with design/css. Here is what I have so far:
Please let me know what you think, and how I can improve it. I know it probably needs a lot of work, and it's too much of the same color, and maybe all of the gradiant stuff is too much. This will be the homepage, and am not sure yet how I will make the rest of the pages look.... any ideas/suggestions for that?
I would like it to have a simplistic theme. Blue is my prefered color. I know a lot of bigger sites (like twitter and facebook use it anyway... but maybe I should be different?) I know about kuler, but am not very good at choosing the right colors, and putting/using them in the right places.
There is a huge disconnect between your model and your stated desire for a "simplistic" design.
You say you're "not the best with design/css", yet your posted critique of the model indicates you have a very good idea of what does and doesn't work. Trust yourself!
I always consider the objectives of the site. I can't imagine a product or service that would not drown in the the model as shown.
For example, here's a recent site I designed. The site virtually disappears and the Greeting Card products are the star of the show.
My 2 cents
It's hard to make suggestions without knowing what products/services you're selling. I'm in agreement with Ken about the disconnect though. You have a lot going on but I'm not sure what any of it has to do with what you're selling.
Colors can be tricky. Used correctly, they deliver powerful subliminal messages and help organize your content. You can use complimentary shades from the same color group but don't forget to add contrasts to give your page visual pop and highlight what's most important.
Below, some web sites that hit the mark and a few that don't.
it is mainly online collaboration tools, and social media type stuff, mainly based off of "cloud" services. i will have to do more reserach, and look at sites, and see what i would like my site to look like i guess.
