Fonts won't display in CS3-- particularly Photoshop & Illustrator

Hello Everyone,

 

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide for this question.  Recently my laptop with my installed softwares crashed.  Luckily I was able to recover most everything and restored it on my newer iMac. 

 

One of the few software that didn't play nice was CS3, so I had to re-install it.  Now, many of the fonts won't show up.  I'm doing a logo for a client and I need some fonts but fonts from the following- New Peninim, Corsiva Hebrew, Ariel Hebrew and/or Raanana-- don't appear after you engage the Type tool.  What shows up in both Photoshop and especially Illustrator is a square box with nothing in it.

 

I've gone to MANY of the help columns on line and followed 4 or 5 different "solutions"-- nothing seems to work.  I even, against my suspicions, called the Adobe customer service and the best they could offer was to post a question here if my answer was not apparent.

 

So, does anyone have an opinion on the matter?  Bearing in mind that I've put fonts in the Adobe folder, reset characters and a few other things since yesterday. 

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    If you have the fonts installed and activated and they are not functioning, you may need to clear your font caches.

     

    Are you using any font management software?  Can you confirm that the fonts are active?  If you're not aware of any font management, open up Font Book (applications -> Font Book) and see if you see the fonts in there.  If they are in the list, are they active?  If they are not in the list, you need to add them there (I think just by dragging them from the finder) and activate them.  Not being a Font Book user I'm not sure, but you may need to restart Illustrator to see the newly activated fonts.

     

    If you don't have the fonts active, your type will be displayed in the default font (Myriad, unless you changed it) which likely doesn't have the hebrew characters, thus all you see is the squares indicating missing characters.

    Sir,

    I've checked and re-checked your suggestions about the fonts.  There's no option for "Active" on "Deactivate" and I was supposing that "active" may be "validate" so that what I did with the 1700 fonts I have.

     

    I also opened OmniDiskSweeper and removed the cache files. 

     

    Nothing.  Still empty boxes and yes, the Myriad fold comes up.  However, the numbers on those fonts work for some reason.  So, it's a still a mystery.

     

    Any other suggestions?

    Seeing the font name in your font list does not mean that it is active - all the fonts used in a file will appear in the font list, regardless of whether or not they are installed and active.  If there are fonts used in a document and they are not active, this will be indicated in the font list by their name having an asterisk ( * ) next to it. 

     

    Copying a file into the Illustrator font folder (on OSX anyway, so far as I know) does not make it active.  You need to be sure that your files are active, which in the case of using fontbook, means making sure that fontbook is aware of them and then making sure they are active within fontbook.  If you see them listed in Font Book, and they are not listed as inactive, are you able to use them in other applications?  Have you tried using them in Word or TextEdit?  If they don't work there, and you are sure they are active, did they get damaged during the recent laptop crash?

    Have you tried using them in Word or TextEdit?  If they don't work  there, and you are sure they are active, did they get damaged during the  recent laptop crash?

      I'm going to try that now. 

     

    As far as it being "active"--  I'm going have to find something in Font Book that says ACTIVE!  I'll go through Font Book again and send you a reply when I get up.

    To Jesseham and others,

    I've tried them in a number of app's and even tried going to the Font Book Help section inquiring about "active" as oppose to validate, but apart from verifying that I have "automatic activation," there's nothing else that tells me that they're not active.

     

    Any wild guesses?

    Jesseham,

    I've tried many, many different suggestions over the past several days and nothing seems to work.  I've deleted all the caches that I know of  and I few I didn't.  Moved folders here and there and even did the examining the FontBook directory to make sure all of the fonts are listed there.  And, everything seems to be fine and okay to use, but it won't show up.  Any other wild guesses?

    Font book will have the font greyed out with the word Off when active, otherwise your fonts is active. If the preview of the font looks good thay are ok adn nto damaged. You may have a permissions problem, adn you can run disk utility and repair them. During a crash often the access rights to folders and files can get messed up in OSX.

     

    Dont put the fonts in the Adobe folder, they should  already be in your Mac OS , unelss they were manually removed or using monolingual, or similar software (which I do to speed up my computer). If they are not on your system, jut make a folder caleld fonts, and drag that folder to font book to make a set.

     

    If you have all 1700 fonts open, then that most likely is your problem and causng your FOND ID conflict,  apps and system to boot slowly. If you have invested in buying 1700 fonts, then you should invest a little more in a font manager like suitcase that works better with large font libraries.
