Does Encore Automatically Compress?

Here is another Encore question.

 

I opened Encore and imported (2) 45 HD minute timelines from Premiere.  When I check the "disc info" section in Encore and choose 4.7GB disc, it  shows that 4.7GB used and 3.002 MB free.  If I change the disc size to 8.54 the disc info changes to 6.055 GB used and 2.48GB free.

 

Does Encore compress the project automatically to try to fit on a 4.7GB disc?   If so is there a noticable loss in quality?

    Yes, Encore will use automatic transcoding... if that is the option you select

     

    The more video time you have Encore fit on a single layer disc, the lower the quality... especially if the video has a lot of movement, such as a sporting event

     

    Again... this is an option you select
