Thanks Dave
I am running Windows XP. Since posting this I have tried other steps, including a system restore and got to the point where I could not uninstall Acrobat. I contacted Adobe Support who provided me with a link to ‘clean’ the system of Acrobat. This has not worked (new error message: "Internal error 2753 dist_acrodist.exe") and I have also tried the steps on the following link, (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error-internal-error-2753-dist.html) but it will not let me delete the Acrobat folder.
The software may be old but we have been running it fine until now.
Best regards

Steps:
1. Go to Control Panel>Add Remove programs and run a repair on Acrobat.
2. Assuming you can now open Acrobat, go to help>updates and see if the updates work. If not, then go to http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform= Windows and download the updates. Install them in order (generally they are not cummulative and have to be installed in order. The download and updates may resolve the problem even if (1) does not do the job.
3. If all else fails, then uninstall Acrobat (Of course, I am assuming you still have the CDs), remove the Acrobat folder completely, run a registry cleaner (there is one for later versions of Acrobat, not sure for AA6), and reinstall.
