Hi - Premiere elements 10 won't play some vob and avi files I have.
I've run them through g-spot, which says I have the correct codecs.
So why won't PE10 play them?!
Thanks!
Exactly what codec is inside the AVI wrapper? (not all AVI files will edit... it all depends on the exact codec)
Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
The VOB's should be using the MPEG-2 DVD CODEC, which is installed with PrE.
For the AVI's, you will need to tell us exactly what the CODEC inside is. Some CODEC's, that installed properly, cannot be used by PrE, just as John T. points out. Please let us know what it is. If it's DivX, or Xvid (two popular, delivery-only CODEC's), it is most likely that PrE cannot use that for editing.
Along with the link that John T. furnished, see these too:

Hi - thanks for your comments.
The VOB files are mpeg2 - and play under windows explorer. But PE10 in organizer only has them as generic thumbnails (filmstrip or speaker). It also seems to mis-identify them - the file that is the main video file (which I double-click on under explorer) has a generic speaker thumbnail only in organizer - so it just plays sound, no video.
The AVIs are all MJPG.
I'm not trying to edit with any of these files (and indeed, am not bothered if I can't), but I would like to be able to see them as proper thumbnails in the organizer and to have them play when I double click on them.
Seems a bit wierd that PE10 can't play them properly when Windows can - so the codecs must be all ok??
Thanks
Richard

Not always... playing is not the same thing as editing

I know that Bill Hunt has written an article about Motion JPG editing and PrElements, but I don't have a direct link handy
The MJPEG article is here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/730396?tstart=30
@ Ricardomax,
All VOB's are not created equal. The first VOB can also have navigation and Menus inside, and depending on the hardware, or software, that wrote the VOB's, they may not Import properly. That VOB article, that John T. linked to in Reply # 1, covers some of those problems. As an example, most DVR machines add some rudimentary Menus and navigation, but they are NOT 100% DVD-compaitble. When using such VOB's, one must rip the MPEG-2 from within the VOB container to use them in PrE, or Premiere Pro. Any 100% DVD-compatible VOB should work fine, and with the PrE installed Adobe MainConcept MPEG-2 CODEC.
Good luck,
Hunt
