Why the export folder is sometimes not the same as the previous export?

Sometimes, when I export a pdf from InDesign, the destination folder is not the same as the previous export.

Why does it change ?

Is it a bug of InDesign CS5 (Mac) ?

It's difficult to reproduce because it's not a regular problem, but it's really annoying.

The destination location and filename is saved per each individual file.

If that's important to you, and if you're on a Mac, invest a few bucks in an excellent third-party product called Default Folder X: It gives you total control over stuff like that. Well supported, always keeps up with OS changes.

It might have to do with the name. If you accept the default filename for the PDF, it should default to exporting inthe same folder where the .indd is located. If you change the name it should default to the last folder where you did an export.

If someone edits "2012_11.Indd" and does a.pdf export to a folder called "2012_November", then that folder is where .pdfs will export into the future.

Now if InDesign does not have access to the previous file path for whatever reason:

    • even one single character gets changed in a folder name
    • the folder was local, and you are working from a server file on a different computer

then I believe InDesign will go back to make the .pdf in the same folder as the .indd file

Do you possibly have any nonstandard characters in your filename or path? (eg: backslash or colon).
