First of all create a copy of the file and then follow the Kb article to recover the file :-

remove the operator mentioned in the error message and then check.
This is a case of curupt file there are a number of reasons why the files get corrupt. I have at times used one of the following methods to recover the data
1. Create a new illustrator document and then place the ilustrator file, AI in this case places the PDF data, and then save it as a AI file. Remember this will work only if you have saved PDF data whle saving the file.
2. open file if it opens up after the offending operator message and then copy paste into a new document..
Get a friend's laptop where you can use AI CS5 trial. Save a CS5 version of your CS6 file from within Ai and then open the CS5 version of the file in your friend's laptop in recovery mode following the document. Recover CS5 Ai documents.
Hi Moluapple - thanks for the script! sounds promising but I've never scripted before - Is this script written in .scpt or .js or is this .vbs? (or any of the above?)
I've read that I can use a text editor to save the correct extension and then I can add it to my "/Illustrator CS6/Presets" directory, so I can run it within illustrator. Here's the link to script info for any other noobs like me who read this later: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/p df/illustrator/scripting/cs6/Illustrator-Scripting-Guide.pdf
So I just pasted the above script from Moluapple into a text editor and saved as "RecoveryFile.jsx" in the Presets/Scripts/En/ dir - and it worked great! When I ran it - it opens a dialog for me to sleect the corrupted file - then it saved a .txt file into that same directory. Good stuff.
Now what?! lol. I'm going to try finding the illegal or misplaced operator in the text file then delete it - but how do I get this .txt file back into an AI file? Any help is appreciated :-)
Thanks so much for your advice! I have been having a meltdown over a CS6 ai file that became corrupt (and the recent backups as well) losing the top bunch of layers (and 20-30 hours of work) and with your method I have recovered all that stuff. It's not in the neat little groups and layers it was, but it's THERE. Thanks you for preventing my personal meltdown.
