CS6 crashes on exporting to PDF

I am having a problem withexporting to PDF in CS6.

If a PDF is placed within an InDesign document and the whole document is then exported to PDF then InDesign CS6 crashes if the PDF that has been placed was created in Quark (these were actually created in Quark 8).

It's ok with PDFs from made in other programmes.

It is also ok if you use CS5.5 (which I have had to temporarily go back to).

I have tried chatting to Adobe but they ended up giving me a phone number to call. Have spent over an hour on the phone and not spoke to anyone yet.

So does anyone know the answer or is it a case of hoping that it gets fixed in a future update.

I've not seen a Quark PDF crash ID before, but I've seen cases where things disappear, and it might be related. In my experience most Quark users don't seem to have a clue what OPI is or that it is turned on by default in Quark. If there are OPI comments in the PDF that can be a problem.

Without actually having the PDF file that triggers the problem (the one created from QuarkXPress 8) to actually analyze, there is not much that any of us can do to assist you.

Put it in a dropbox folder and post a link.

Does your document in Indesign have more placed PDFs other than this?

If yes, does your document export correctly if you remove this Quark PDF?

    Chris,

Please delete your personal info when replying ny email, and in future put your crash reports on pastebin.com and put links to them here.

Whatever the problem is with the original PDF, it's localized to your machine. That file works just fine here in CS6. I suspect some sort of third-party plugin. The crashed thread seems to involve type (no surprise) so my first suspect would be a font manager, but are there any other plugins you've installed?

You were correct - it was a font problem in the original PDF and by getting the original Quark files I have worked around this.

That's not what I said, exactly. I said it seemed to be font related, but that the PDF itself worked fine in CS6 here (and for Bob), so the problem, whaterver it is, is on your machine, not in the PDF.

I'd say "worked around" rather than solved, but if you're happy, that's all that counts.

As Peter said - you found a workaround. I had the same issue this morning: imported pdfs from other designers (regardless of the design suite they used, e.g., Quark or InDesign) were crashing upon attempt to create a pdf. In my case, it's near to impossible to get the original designer on the phone and have him/her reconstruct the pdf so that it works in CS6. What I do in these cases is open the original pdf file from the designer in Photoshop (I'm using CS6) and create a 300dpi CMYK tif file. I flatten the image before saving and then import this tif file into my InDesign project. That's my workaround.

Rasterizing the type in Photoshop is really a poor workaround. Oftentimes problem PDFs can be "refried" successfully by running them through Distiller which leaves the vector content intact. That's not a great solution, either, but it's better than turning crisp type into a 300 ppi image.

Peter - Advice noted. But I'm still having this issue. Can you explain the process of "refrying"? I've tried to resave the file as a new name via Adobe, place it, and it's still crashing the document when I try to create a pdf of the whole thing. In my case, I have many other placed pdfs in the project from other sources, but just this one is crashing it.

Refrying means to run the PDF through Distiller (but that means you need to have a full version of Acrobat installed so you actually have distiller).

In Acrobat, save the problem PDF as .eps, then File > Create PDF > From File... or open distiller (probably better, since you get to set the parameters there), and pick the .eps you just saved.

I've had massive problems with InDesign6 files crashing on export to PDF all week. All my imported PDFs are forms I distributed. I worked around by printing a PostScript file, then distilling it in Acrobat Pro. Works like a charm. Certainly not as elegant as the Export way, but gets the job done.

Has there been any new resolve to this? I'm having the exact same problem as the original poster. This is my first week with CS6, upgraded from CS4, which never had an issue like this. Quark-made PDFs that were never a problem in CS4 are now crashing CS6 every time I try to export to PDF, regardless of fonts used. I've resorted to refrying PDFs but that is extremely inefficient considering I'm having to do that to nearly every ad placed in the publication I'm working on.

Nevermind... I saw there was an 8.0.1 update that seems to have fixed the issue... So far.

I have had the same problem when exporting and troyjack is right, just updated to 8.0.1 and the problem seems to have sorted - fingers crossed.

Had the same problem. I opened the Quark PDF in Acrobat and used Pitstop to outline the fonts. You could probably do the same thing within Illustrator as long as you have the fonts installed.

    Thanks for the help!
