Text and Paragraph not working.

Why can't I change the font in InDesign? I have used Id CS4 extensively and now in my new CS6 I cannot chage anything for fonts or paragraph styles. The toolbar is there but I when I click on the drop down it doesn't do anything.

Windows? Is it this: InDesign tools and panels don't respond to mouse clicks (Windows 7/Vista)

That fixed the problem but now my previous INDD files are not recognized.
