Hello everyone! I would like to build an interactive map, I think Flash is the tool to it, but I’m new to Flash. Can someone offer me some guidance on starting/learning how to use Flash, maps, tools, some books or resources, etc.? It will be added to a Web site and for in site presentations. I surely appreciate it!!
AS3 is Actionscript 3, the programming language that you use when developing with Flash.
Since you had to ask, please don't take offense... If you are doing this as a learning experience, then go for it - there's a long learning curve ahead of you and you may have to start with simpler designs to get an understanding of the basics. If this involves creating something for a client, you will be better off hiring someone to do it for you.
Mr. Murphy, there is no offense in the asking, and I thank you for it. The answer is yes, it is (I hope) a learning experience for me. I’m a History Professor, invading a all new field; computers. I Bought Web Premium CS5, a couple of years with the purpose of creating a History Website. That is almost done (Dreamweaver) but now the endeavors are of grandeur conquests (Lol), and want to make some interactive maps to go along with some web pages. That is why I ask for guidance, books and resources to get me started with this new task. Thank you!!
Prepare to become very familiar with two of the mist useful tools to any Flash developer - Google and the Flash Help Documentation. Between these two resources and a reasonably sound mind there isn't much that you can't eventually solve.
I donn't think you will find any books prepared on the subject of creating interactive maps, though you might be able to find some tutorials. In your case I recommend starting with a Google search using search terms like "AS3 interactive map tutorial". With whatever you find, there is a good chance you will be immediately in over your head, so expect it.
