Open Higher version Illustrator file in CS4

Hi We are using Illustrator CS4.  Our client sent around 10 illustrator files.  Whenever we try to open them, we get the following error " Cant open the illustration. The file was generated by a newer version of Illustrator and cannot be opened.  Please resave it in a format compatible with your version of Illustrator."

 

How do we do this? We need to ask them to resave? Or can we do something to open it at our end?

    The only thing you can do is upgrade. Or, if you have Acrobat Pro you could try opening the files with that, and then export/save as Encapsulated Postcript (eps).

     

    Ask your client to save to Illustrator CS4.

     

     

    Be aware, art can flatten and change when back-saved or exported as EPS from Acrobat. It's not always a viable solution.
