Trouble Aligning Text due to Bounding Box (CS 6)

I am struggling to properly align text because the bounding boxes are not centered around the text.  Therefore, when I try to align it with another object, it is off.  I am using CS 6 and, generally, the point and type tool.  I have read other forums which suggest it might be the type of font (that perhaps they are "bad" fonts) but it doesn't seem to matter which type of font I use.  The bounding box always has extra space underneath the text, even when using a very standard font like Times New Roman.  Can anyone shed light on this?  Many thanks!

    1. In Preferences, activate "Use Preview Bounds".

    2. Select text to be aligned.

    3. Go to Effect > Path > Outline Object.

    4. Align

Great!!!!  Even I was facing the same problem.

Now just for knowledge, I want to know why the small gap comes below the Text (which causes bigger bounding box) in the first place. What is the logic?

    Typographic tradition.

Do a search for beard line in conjunction with typography, for example.
