Try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

Thanks, I tried trashing the prefs, but still no swatchs. They're all locked up.

Do they work if you create and log in with a new user account?

Same thing happened to me. I was able to assign colors on the toolbar, but not the pallet. I upgraded to 8.0.1 and now it seems fine.

Peter,

I didn't understand your suggestion to log in with a new user account; regardless, our IT dept. at work is reinstalling the software.

A new user is a basic diagnostic step. If it works in a new user, the problemn is in the original user account configuartation someplace, if it doesn't, it's more likely an application problem.

Holy crap, it's doing it again after a new re-install and the InDesign update. I have no control over the swatches pallete.

Is it possible to select color swatches from the menu?

A reinstall doesn't necessarily remove corrupt user info. Please test in a new user account. And what is the OS?

Do youhave any third party plugins? A font manager?

I figured out what was causing the disabling of the swatch and color pallets, last week in Win7, I got a new 30" monitor and changed the display preference to "Larger 150%" in control panel/display. For some reason this totally disables the swatch and color pallets.

We firgured this out when my IT support guy connected to my computer it changed the resolution to that on his screen and it worked when I was showing him what was going on. I remembered that I had changed the resolution .

I'm surprised you didn't report the other usual symptoms of large fonts. That, or mentioning Windows 7 early on woud probably have gotten you a referral to InDesign tools and panels don't respond to mouse clicks (Windows 7/Vista) and the solution a little faster.
