With .psd files I can right-click -> Open With -> Choose Program and see a list of programs that I can set as the default for opening this type of file. The list includes PE4, PE7 and PE10. With .jpeg files it only shows PE4 and PE7, and with .png files it only shows PE4. If I browse to the program I want (say the PE10 editor .exe file) and select it with double-click or 'open', the choice is ignored and PE4 remains selected in the Choose Program window.
Obviously, all 3 versions can read and write all 3 types of file - so what's happening here? I'm guessing this is a Windows issue, but I thought I'd ask in case there's a setting in PE that's stopping them from being visible.
PE4, PE7, PE10
The 'Always use...' checkbox doesn't seem to be relevant in this case - the problem remains whether it's checked or not. The real problem is that the programs are not appearing in the displayed list at all. If I try to add them to the list by clicking 'Browse' and navigating to the executables, the selection is ignored, and whatever was selected when I first opened the 'Choose Program' dialog remains selected.
In other words, I can't use 'Open With' to open .jpgs or .pngs in PE10 - whether it's one time only or always - while I can successfully drag and drop them onto the desktop item or open them from inside PE10 as normal.
As I say, I suspect this is a Windows issue rather than a PE issue, but I'd hope someone might have seen it before!
OK, I've found a cure - though I still don't know why it occurred in the first place!
If anyone else has this problem, log in as administrator, go to Control Panel->Folder Options->File Types, select the file type (by extension), click 'Advanced' and select 'Open' in the textbox. Then click 'Edit', then 'Browse', navigate to the required executable and click OK.
The file type is now associated with the program, which will now be the default opener, and also appear on the list in 'Open With'.
