The file is coming up as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and imports into CS3 without any issues, plays fine in Bridge CS6 too.(Cretive Cloud User)
On the computer with PrPro CS 6 (assume that is your version, but please verify), do you have Apple's QT Player, or another H.264 CODEC installed?
Are you getting a CODEC error? If so, exactly what does it say?
What camera is shooting AVCHD/H.264, and putting it into an AVI wrapper?
Good luck,
Hunt
H.264 will NOT work inside an AVI wrapper http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854115
-Insignia camera uses H.264 to either AVI or MOV... so use the MOV wrapper
I'm not sure what camera the original file came from as the person who gave me the files is not contactable at the moment. All I know is that it seemed to import into CS3 without any issues but wouldn't import into CS6.
I have, however, been able to locate the original files and the are .mpg files so will try importing them.
What is the codec inside that MPG wrapper?
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037

What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
.
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

Codec:H264
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
Audio 0x00ff (AAC)
48000Hz 128 kb/s tot (2 chnls)
File Length Correct
OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
Video: 68.4 MB (98.27%)
Audio: 1.09 MB (1.58%)
AVI Overhead: 106 KB (0.15%)
Have tried the other two suggestions.Reinstalling etc. Reinstalled from clean and did software update.
Seems a fairly common problem but not a fairly common fix sadly
The common fix was posted in the FAQ entry. However, this doesn't apply to H,264 in an AVI wrapper, which PP doesn't handle, and to the best of my knowledge, no camera creates.
So...the solution may be to go back to the original camera media. Or more likely, try using a consumer editor for the non-standard clip you're trying to work with, as they often handle this type of thing better than PP.
I had tried to import what I thought was the original mpg files after trying to import the avi files.
Pardon my ignorance but do the details below infer the original files are not mpg?
