Image quality affected by non image change.

Nov 26, 2012 11:45 AM

Newbie using PSE 10 on iMac.

Assuming a photograph is originally saved as a JPEG, does any none photographic change or addition to an image result in the image being saved again with the resultant degradation in image quality?

For example if I were to change the caption on a photograph 20 times, or change/add peoples names 20 times,  would this mean that the photograph would be saved 20 times and thus reduce the image quality?

I am concerned that any change I do, whether photographic or not, is resulting in the photograph being saved again and again loosing quality all the time.

Captions are saved to the database in Elements and are therefore non-destructive. But constant exporting, editing, and notably rotating jpegs will degrade them over time. The use of PSD files and adjustment layers can help to overcome degradation at the pixel level. It’s for this reason that non-destructive editors such as Lightroom are becoming ever more popular.
