I have a Canon Powershot SX50 HS and downloaded and installed the ACR version 7.2. When I attempt to open a CR2 file in PSE 10, I get the message "Cannot open ...CR2 because it is the wrong type of file". Why can't I open the file? Thanks.
Can you explain this further? I read a question about someone who had another version of PSE, and he was told to get the latest ACR to use the RAW files. Didn't mention anything about having to use the converter.
So does PSE in general (any version) not allow you to open a Raw file directly? You have to run the converter each time? Not practical for me if its going to be that time consuming to process RAW. Is that also true of PS, i.e. that you need to convert it??
What was the original plugin for PSE 10 so I can get that back? How is it different than the latest ACR?
Are there any articles anywhere that explains RAW in general under both PSE and PS?
Using RAW files isn't sounding like such a good idea any more.
Possibly my install of 7.2 didn't work, because if in PSE, I do "Help - About Plugin - Raw", it says version 6.4.1.145.
So if I can't open with that version, is it because my camera is not supported? Doesn't seem right that I have to upgrade to PSE11 since I just barely got 10. Aren't upgrades to versions for the full price, as if someone was getting PSE for the first time?
If you are in a hurry to process your raw files use Canon DPP which came on the DVD with your camera. Otherwise download the DNG 7.3 release candidate and you can then use the images in PSE10.
Adobe Labs Downloads click here DNG Converter 7.3 RC
You can convert a whole folder of CR2 images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:
Thanks, 2 questions:
1) So once the 7.3 release candidate goes live (out of beta), I can download that plug-in and then open CR2 files directly in PSE10?
2) If I want to try the beta, is it for PSE or just full photoshop? The download page that I looked at says "Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 7.3 Release Candidate" and it mentions cs6 only. If it also applies to PSE, would I be able to use it as a plug-in in addition to the converter?

Question 1 = Not directly in PSE10. Should be ok in PSE11. Use the DNG converter to open DNG format in PSE10.
Question 2 = I have not yet tested the 7.3 relase candidate but it should work in PSE11. Maybe some other user has already tested it ?
If you don't want to upgrade to PSE11, the DNG converter is your solution.
OK Thanks. That answers all my questions, but I'm not happy with the answer as it pertains to Adobe policy. I purchased PSE 10 just a few months ago, and bought this camera less than a week ago, one reason for which is that it supports Raw. So now if I want to use Raw as a plug-in, I need to upgrade to 11 (using the converter is too much extra time). That doesn't seem fair. At the very least, plug-in releases should be supported for all versions of PSE less than 1 year old. Also most software companies provide new releases at a reduced upgrade price for current users. Why should users that already own the software pay full price for an upgrade? Please provide this feedback to upper management and I request a response from them. Thanks.
