In contrast to previous versions, for whatever reason, I cannot open a PhotoShop Elements image directly by simply 'double clicking' on the image. When I do this with PE 11, PE 11 opens blank and I then have to go to the Open menu and find the image I want to open (the very image I 'clicked' on in the first place)? Why this extra time consuming step?
I think you have selected to automatically open images in Editor, but you have chosen the wrong file. You have chosen the Welcome Screen, not Editor. You will need to link it again. Please refer to the following post for further clarification:

Thanks for the reply.
However, I don't understand your answer.
To refresh my memory, I just now selected a jpg. image and opened it with PSE 10. When PSE 10 opened, there was my image, ready to be worked with. However, when I repeated the exact same thing with with PSE 11, PSE 11 opened a blank page and I had to go to the Open menu and reopen my image. I don't understand why this extra step is required with PSE 11.
The screen shot you suggested means nothing to me in post http://forums.adobe.com/message/4876725#4876725 as I've no idea where it comes from or what I'm looking at.
Can you provide further details?
Right click on a photofile
In the menu that comes up, go to "open with", then "choose default program">>select Photoshop Elements.
Tick always use selected program to open this type of file
This establishes the file association.
Well try this: Launch the Welcome Screen of PSE11. In the top right you will see a settings icon. Click on it.
Now you will see a dropdown. Select Photo Editor in it. Click Ok. Now close Welcome Screen.
Now right click on the image and select Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. See if it works.
In this particular example, I simply selected a jpg. file, clicked the 'Right' mouse button and selected 'Open with...'. I then selected PSE 10 and the image opened in PSE 10, ready for editing.
The same procedure and same jpg. file was followed by selecting PSE 11. This time, only PSE 11 opened; no image.
An image saved in PSE 11 format reacts exactly the same way. When the saved image is double-clicked, only PSE 11 opens, rather than the image itself.
It seems that the association has been established as the image icon shows the PSE symbol. However, the image simply will not open by 'double-clicking' or by selecting 'Open with...'. Instead PSE 11 opens blank and I then have to open the image file by using the 'Open' menu from within PSE 11.
Well, I wonder if the ability to open a file in PSEv.11 with a double click has been aborted when Adobe developed this iteration of the program.
I have PSEv.8. Perhaps someone with v.11 will try this maneuver and report back.
Please do the following steps:
1. Right click on the image, and select Open with..
2. Click on Choose Default Program.
3. Click on the Browse Button.
4. Browse to following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11
Please see it's Program Files (x86), if you have 64-bit OS, otherwise just Program Files.
5. Select PhotoshopElementsEditor file at this location.
6. Select Open and then check the "Always Use the selected program to open this kind of file"
7. Press OK.
See if it works.
Again, thanks for the reply and concern.
I haven't worked with PSE 11 for a few days but in short, "No". It seems, as some others have suggested, that PSE 11 has changed that particular aspect of the program. I can't understand a reason for the change but for some reason or other, it seems that the extra steps may now be required.
If this is really the situation, then it seems that Adobe has taken a step backward.
