Smart Guide tips? Too sticky!

Do you have any tips with working with Smart Guides? Usually, they are fantastic. But in projects with a lot of objects, it kind of goes crazy — snapping to every nook and cranny of objects I don't care about on the other side of the page

Is there any sort of fine tuning I can do? How do I get Smart Guides to ignore certain layers? Are there any 3rd party plug-ins that do it better?

Turn off in preferences what you want them to NOT stick to, and there is a snapping tolerance you can change the 4 pt default to a slightly smaller number.

If you have lots of vector poins, lock or hide objects or layers that are in the way.

Hide them, select what you need and Shift+Ctrl+Alt+3 to hide the rest. When done Ctrl+Alt+3 to show hidden.

    Navarro,

Apart from the Samrt Guides (disabling) options you may have, depending on your version, locking (layers and/or underlying/nearby objects) may be your friend.

Jacob, the Smart Guides still see the locked items and layers for me. CS5

As per post #3 Jacob is using velvet guides. Plus, Jacob is using AI version 10 (whose smart guides also sees locked things).

    I'm perplexed.

    Emil and Kurt,

Indeed the Smart Guides see the locked things, but they do not snap at them like crazy dogs, which seems to be the issue that Navarro wishes to get rid of.

And velvet guides are nice and soft and gentle.

Still no show where you are (http://forums.adobe.com/people/Jacob%20Bugge)?

    Jacob,

unlike the smart guides in AI 10 the current smart guides do recognize a lot more about surrounding objects without first having to define reference points (as in AI 10).

That may now indeed cause a fireworks of smart guide's insights and that can be distracting sometimes.

Probably it's an auspicious idea to add an option that would allow you to ignore locked layers and items.
