Drop shadow not showing up

I am using CS4. I want to add a shadow to some text. It works on one piece of text, but not on another. It shows the shadow in the layers palette, but it's grayed out (on the one that's not working). I tried converting the text to outlines... same thing. The layer isn't locked... so I don't know what's going on. Why won't my shadow show up? Thanks.
