XMP files sit next to raw files and contain the non-destructive editing settings. XML files contain metadata.

Thanks 1.99jon, can I stop the XMP - XML files being displayed in my photo folder?

If you use the organizer they won't be displayed, but they will be managed automatically if you move, rename, delete or backup your files. Also, they will be shown as thumbnails with your edits applied.
If you are using Windows explorer... good luck !

No you can't stop them but you could sort the folder by file size (largest to smallest) and all those small files will appear at the bottom of the list.
