Illustrator - After Effects Layers Question

Having problems importing Illustrator layers into After Effects.  I've tried all the recommendations from "release to layers" to "setting colors to rgb".  When I import into After Effects and select "composition - retain layer size".  AI layers are sub layers too.

I don't see the individual layers to animate.

After "release to layers" you need to drag them out of their mother-layer to create main layers

Since the thumbnails in your screenshot are blank, I would assume you still have something in there liek a clipping mask or whatever...

Not really, but have you selected the artwork on the artboard and just right-clicked and doen an Ungroup/Release Clipping Mask/ Release Compound Path? Sometimes AI creates an artboard-sized clipping mask for no apparent reason and it will mess up stuff...
