Creating "color fade"

I would like to take a photograph and apply whatever effects are necessary to have it appear to have full color in the center, fading to black and white at the edges (think gradient black to transparent, only I want the fade to be gradient color to B&W).

I'm having a difficult time wrapping my head around the best way to achieve this goal.  Any suggestions?

I work with PS CS6 Extended (v 13.0.1 x32) on a Win XP sp3 platform.

Add a black layer on top, and cut out the center with a very feathered circle or oval. Set this layer to hue. done.

add a hue/saturation layer, then create a layer mask on the hue/sat layer (set to -100 saturation) and use gradient tool set to oval and apply it to mask (black gradient on white mask layer)

Add a Black & White Adjustment Layer. Either give the B&W layer a layer mask containing a gradient or give it a vector mask containing a subtractive path and feather the vector mask in Properties panel.
