i am new to the world of photo shop. i am struggling to find a way to change the background of a picture to just white? any help (basic simply step by step) would be great

Thank you so much for the reply. i will try that now i am working off a mac book pro and it's so complicated!!!!!! I have a on-line clothes website an all i want is for the picture of the item with a pure white background! you would think this is easy I'll give your link a try now. Thanks again
It’s always easier if the item was originally photographed against a solid color background. Then you can use the magic wand selection tool to select the background and press ctrl+i to invert.
You can also create a new file with a white background and move the object to that.
If the background is white already why don't you replace that white with a different white. This may be the simplest, just a paint bucket or something along those lines.
