How can I run Illustrator without Java? Is there a Java-dependent plugin I can turn off, a resource I can delete, or some way to coax it into performing the function I bought it to perform?
(I will not be installing Java on my machines. I wish Adobe had told me that the software I bought was reliant on obsolete middleware.)
For anyone else experiencing this problem, I've managed to get Illustrator working without Java, though it may be in a compromised state. I've narrowed down the problematic component to something inside:
Adobe Illustrator CS6 > Plug-ins > Illustrator Formats
Illustrator will launch without that folder, but with alerts about missing resources, of course. However, if you start adding the items back into the folder, it's possible to get Illustrator running without any Java calls or alerts about missing resources.
I just haven't figured out which of those files it is yet. All I know is, I'm running Illustrator, and I don't have Java installed.
YMMV, but it's possible.
Of course -- two very different technologies. Illustrator (still) requires Java to run, proosibly because of a legacy component it uses (or at least checks for / registers) during the boot process.
And I can't be alone in my dislike of Java, given this very timely headline today:
Apple again blocks latest version of Java through OS X anti-malware system
Looking forward to the day when we can upgrade our way out of this mess, Adobe.
i was able to remove only FXGFileFormat.aip and it runs without prompting to install java.
update 2013-03-18
my cs6 illustrator 16.2.1 update failed with error (log is in: /Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers):
03/18/13 11:02:38:646 | [INFO] | | OOBE | DE | | | | 119165 | ----------- Payload: Adobe Illustrator CS6 Core_16.2.1_AdobeIllustrator16-mul 16.2.1.0 {D5B78026-B998-49E0-A987-3282C862C0E3} -----------

since FXGFileFormat.aip is required for the update, remediation: place file temporarily back into /Applications/Adobe Illustrator CS6/Plug-ins/Illustrator Formats directory, retry the update, move it back out of the directory after the update completes successfully. (no, the java dependency was not removed.)
