And what have you done so far? Which version of AE are you using? What techniques have you tried? There's a million ways to create 3D-ish text, anything from CS6's extrusions to plug-ins liek Element 3D or Zaxwerks Invigorator to "creative" uses of the shatter effect or stacks of tens of layers.... It's really far too generic a questions.
I am using CS5.5 and looking for quick ways to develop 3D text. I have tried the shattered technique but don't like the number of layers it creates when going to render. Does CS5.5 have extrusions? Sorry kind of a noob.
No, After Effects CS5.5 does not have extruded text features. That's new in CS6.

My advice is to go for element 3D. The price is $150. So less then what you are expecting to spend. You would also love to exploit all the features of this plug-in.
