why do I keep getting a white background instead of a colored one when I export from illustrator cs6? I can't find what is causing this in acrobat preferences...

    And exactly what? Paper color in AI is just a simulation and paper is generally assumed to be white elsewhere. If you want a colored background, create a filled shape with the color. Nothing to do with Acrobat or any of that, you're simply using the wrong method.
